Hello, is the Fostex A-8 reel-to-reel any good? Any opinions or information on this recorder would be greately helpfull.
Thanks!!

Not the greatest, but still capable of getting you what you need:) Also, it's far more affordable by allowing you to use 1/4" tapes.

When you split 1/4" tape into 8 tracks you get 1/32" of an inch for each track which doesn't leave much tolerance for error, either alignment or otherwise.

Since that machine is at least 15 years old, look it over carefully before buying. If the heads look ok, look for wear on the tape guides and make sure the pinch roller is in good shape. If all those look good, make sure you have a source for parts -- maybe a simple googling will help you find something on the web...

Thanks! It is in like new condition with remote. I got it for very cheap! I don't have any manual so I'm looking for any informaion or tricks I can find. I need a metal take up reel for it and the part that screws it down (what is that called?). Also, what is the maximum size reel it can take and the maximum lenth of tape (in feet)? How much record time is on one of these tapes at 15ips?
Thank you for the help!!
