hi..
so, i very recently came into a fostex 450 16 channel mixing console for, well, free.. that is, i bought it , tested it and found that it had some significant problems (as i will detail below) and was told upon offering to return it that i could have my money back but keep the deck anyway, since it was bound for the trash otherwise... (if you're reading this, thanks lance! i hope i can revive this thing!) .. anyhow , here's my situation:
i basically just fired the mixer up and tested all the channels for some semblence of a signal by running a guitar straight into the 1/4" input of each channel.. yes, yes, i know this is a very simplistic way to accomplish the task, but it at least told me if signal was passing into the board.. my observations:
when i kept the buss switched to 1/2 for every track i got a stereo signal that i could pan all the way to the L or R and maintain equal volume... however, two of the channels displayed a noticeably louder (stronger?) signal than others.. these channels also seemed to be especially hissy and buzzy when i adjusted the EQ ... what can i do about this? i am fairly confident that i can open up the beast and tinker with it, but i'm not sure where to start or what i should use to clean or what i should clean!
secondly, i noticed that when i switched the buss selector on each track to 3/4, i only got a signal on the L (3) side... this remained true for every track.. if i clicked the solo button i got sound in both ears, but when i tested the signal in the overall stereo mix it only gave me sound on one side (i.e., if i panned hard right i heard nothing) .. is there any problem in particular that generally causes this? a specific board that is the likely culprit? a blown something...? i took the back panel off the deck and scrutinized the power board, checked the fuses (they look OK) ... everything generally looks clean and not fried or burned or discolored...
anyhow, any advice anybody can send my way would be much appreciated.. i realise that i may have to invest in a repair manual to see this through.. anybody know where i can get one? my intention in posting here is just to get a vague notion of what i'm getting myself into before i break out the multimeter...
