"Fortunate Son" (CCR) interpretation

Great rendition. As mentioned above it's a bit of a shocker at first but once you get over that preconceived notion, you realize the quality - it's got lots of parts that make the song interesting and musical.
My first 45 was Up Around the Bend (drove my parents crazy).

It is rather gentle to begin and this doesn't bring out any contrast or subversion for my taste.
It's a warm, pleasant rendition but some bile or even bitter resignation in the delivery would have worked better for me.
Really good in terms of lifting something into a different context though. Synth - nah unless you suddenly go industrial goth which may have been cool.

Okay everyone, here's the new mix, final until we reach the pre-master process for this album of interpretations. Thanks to all those who listened and provided feedback. We did take everyone's opinion into consideration, though of course we did not implement every single suggestions. But even those suggestions we didn't use opened our ears to new possibilities.



Major Changes:
-Lead vocals retracked
-Harmony vocals added in 2nd half of 2nd chorus
-Brand new end of song with much more energy than first mix
-Sustain added to piano VST
-Additional reverb and/or slapback delay used on some elements to add ambiance, but not wash the thing out

Ultimately, this mix represents our vision of the song as we wished to interpret it.

This is still downright fantastic. I didn't notice much ambiance in the quiet verses, but that may be a good thing. I thought it sounded great, so you must've been subtle enough with ambiance to make it work without distraction.

Need more harmony vocals in 2nd chorus, I could just barely tell they were there.

Honestly you could print it as-is. Personally, I could use a tad more electric guitar and a little less acoustic guitar in the power verse. Maybe just a compressor to clamp down on the acoustic to keep those hard strums from sticking out. Maybe a little tiny bit less piano since it's pounding away. And just a little more drums there as well. But that's how I like to hear things, like I said it's a damn fine mix as-is. Those acoustic guitars still sound amazing, as they did before. Very good vocal track as well, I like the added personality to this take.

I like the recording and the interpretation. I like the restraint demonstrated in the arrangement.

The piano . . .the sound is ok. It would benefit from having a sustain pedal connected. There was a synthy flute sound at the start that probably could disappear without being missed.

I am a great fan of re-invented songs. Well done!

It was recorded with a sustain pedal, using an 88 key digital piano as a MIDI controller.

Great stuff Brian. You've really made the song your own, which I respect a lot. I've never understood when someone remakes a song and does it just like the original. I mean, I understand if it's a recording/mixing exercise or a sound-alike recording for some other media or something obviously, but when an artist releases a cover version that's almost exactly like the original, for example:

Great song. Great vibe. The si-fi sound at 0:55s is awesome. Simple but very effective.
Also really dig the build up on 2m30s. It was unexpected.

This is a very well recorded song. I would bring in the drums a little earlier though.
