I played with this or an older version of Cubase in school. The version I have now is SE and I can't figure out how to add the plugin instruments for a midi controller.

From what I remember, it would open a "bank" which would show me a list of dozens of instruments to be used via a midi controller. (drums, keyboard, piano, grand piano, and other less usuable stuff like helicoptor sounds, etc)

Question is: How do I access this type of feature and do I need to download bank files or plugins to do this?

Using an M-audio usb midi controller.

found some of my old projects on a floppy and the saved projects are .all files. What version of Cubase used .all files? SE uses .cpr and now I'm more confused than ever.

I remembered the midi controller would do drums that sounded pretty real (not that fake drum machine sound)

In the file menu, choose Import --> Cubase Song. That will let you import your .all arrangements.

I don't know about the midi stuff.

Thanks for the input.

hit F11.. this will bring up the VSTInstruments window... pick your instrument from the list... Then, create a midi track. For your input, select your controller. For the output, the VSTInstrument you selected should be in the pulldown list. Select it. Hit the record enable button on the track and all is good.
