Who cares!

No, I mean, really. For $7700, who cares? Who here can NOT think of better ways to improve their sound for $7700? That is simple a ridicolous amount of money.
 
I have to say regebro has a good point in my opinion.

I mean first-off, I'd rather a Universal Audio LA-2A Reissue and Manley Labs Pultec EQP-1A for a total of $4500.

what i've heard from people that know(those people not being me) the manley pultec sounds nothing like the real thing(if it was maintained well of course), they say you'll get as close with the BF or UAD emulation, i don't know for sure but i know the UAD emulation is pretty darn good....
 
Well I've always said that if you want the real thing sound, buy the real thing. But in this case, that's beside the point.

The point was supporting what regebro was saying... As still, I'd rather spend $4500 on what I said than $7700 on the real thing... Just as nice (regardless of how different) of improvement on your recordings, for much less.
 
Yeah, I agree the pricing is a little over the top. But these two items are the staple of almost every album in the last 30 years. It would be nice to own them but the maintenance would drive you nuts.
 
I just learned the other day that no one can reproduce the inductors in the original Pultecs (the same goes for the transformers in the original Neves). We can make close copies , but in the end, they just don’t sound like the originals. With that in mind, $7700 for the two might be a steal. Especially considering what they’ll be worth in years to come.
 
Still, I'd spend the money on an Otari MX-80 before I spent it on that... And the MX-80 value will continue to decline...

so, what actually made those albums? the pultecs, or the music?

Actually, both..but the LA2A is probably more prevelent than the pultec.
 
Somebody just up'd his retirement fund by selling that.

Just wait another 30 years and there will be a whole new wave of "vintage" equipment based on albums produced NOW.

Avalon will be on top someday along with Distressors etc.

Stupid You can get a new one for 1/20 of the price and it is not a piece of shit like the one being sold here.
 
I know a guy who made his own LA-2A from some plans he found for a few hundred bucks. supposedly it's awesome

Someday, when I retire and have the time, I may try and build one of these kits. However, from others who have weighed in on the subject, if you can save up for a distressor, you pretty much have an LA2A, 1176 as well as a range of completely new sounds. I think one of these will definitley be a vintage unit in the future and saving for one might be a worthwhile goal.
