Some friends of mine went to a studio in Nashville last week, Fireside Studios, check out the big tube running off the snare. Its got a mic at the other end. Check out in front of the kick too.

Probably. Most likely for an effect or mixed way under the main signal. Guess wee would have to hear it soloed to know huh? I'll probably try it eventually. Nothing to lose, really.

My guess is they're using the speaker as a mic. Just a guess.
