Hey guyz,

n00b quesion for y'all

I have several pieces of equipment that can utilize optional foot pedals/switches.

My question is: Is there a functional difference between a sustain pedal, a "punch-in" pedal and a "talk-back" pedal?

My assumption is that the "punch-in" pedal and a "talk-back" pedals are simply ON/OFF or interrupt switches. However, I'm not positive about this or the sustain pedals.

Any advice would be appreciated.

A momentary swicth (common sustain pedal type of switch) only functions while you hold the pedal down, such as for sustain. Used as a talk-back pedal, a sustain pedal activates talk-back while you keep the pedal pressed down. A latch-type switch will activate when you press it once and de-activate upon pressing it again (like on stomp boxes). So for talk-back, you would press the latch-type once talk and press it again to turn talk-back off. With a momentary switch you would hold it down while you talk and then take your foot off of it when you have finished talking.

Although I haven't tried to use a footswitch for talk-back, I would go with the momentary switch, unless my foot kept slipping off while I was talking, or I kept accidentally stepping on it during a session. If that happened I would try a latch-type, but I would be concerned that I would forget to turn it off, or that it would make an audible click sound when activated.

The E-Bay description makes it sound like this can be used as a momentary, or latch switch, but this is what it says on the Boss site:

"The FS-5U is a momentary type footswitch and the FS-5L is a latch-type footswitch."

Exactly what I want for sustain on my MIDI controller, MC-303, and for "talk back."

I have the Boss FS-5u and I use it for a punch in/out switch and it is a momentary footswitch.

The BuyitNow is not a deal. I think I picked mine at a local shop for $22.00 new.
