I am recording using a Tascam DP-01FX portastudio and im planning buying a compessor the one i am thinking of is the Focusrite Trackmaster Pro, I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with one of these and what your ideas are on this Piece of equipment also how much this will increase my recording quality ???

many Thanks

It will increase recording quality by 37.8%

Seriously, these get pretty good reviews. I'm planning to get a Twin Track Pro in a couple of months.

I like mine. It's not a world class pre, but it's a cut above the entry level stuff, has a nice optical compressor, and can make a much fatter sounding track than most mixer pre's. I find having it and a DMP-3 gives me a pair of transparant pre's, and a fatter, bigger, more colorful pre for vocs and such.
I have some other pre's, nothing worth bragging about, but the Focusrite and the DMP-3 see the lions share of use with me.

Got one a few months back.
I use it mostly on snare, vocals and the occasional guitar track. It is kind of thin sounding, but that's usually OK as long as you don't use it on every single track in a dense mix. It doesn't provide a whole lot of gain (most ribbons won't like it), but for the price it's definetly worthwhile.

Really nice units, these Twin Trak pros. Very clean preamps and one of the few 'channel strips' under Aus$1200 with compressor sidechain inserts.
Very quick to set up a fairly decent sound with its single linked compression threshold/ratio pot.
Me, I like to noodle around with settings so I'm now looking at something with a few more twiddly bits to play with like the JoeMeek TwinQ :)

Trakmaster Pro

I have one, I like it, and it works for me.
My other pres are an ART MPA GOLD 2 channel tube pre and an ART Tube MP Studio.

I would be very interested to hear how you would compare the pres of your Focusrite to the ART MPA Gold.

ART GMPA pre vs Focusrite TMP pre?

They are 2 different animals but both are currently selling at $299.
The comments above from others describe it aptly.
Trakmaster Pro (TMP) has a little more sound/signal affecting electronics with the mid scoop eq, built in compression section and the latency free monitoring section. It does not put out as much signal strength/gain as the ART until you turn on the TMP's compressor, then look out!
The TMP is a solid state unit and that is why I bought it. For a solid state kind of sound. I like it and use it for acoustic guitar and voice at times.

For the money, if you are not looking specifically for a true channel strip,
the ART GOLD MPA (GMPA) might be a better buy because:
You get 2-channels of TUBE pre instead of one.
The high pass filter is adjustable (the TMP's is not).
You get input AND output gain so more possible overall gain.
You get adjustable input impedance
Bigger and Easier to read VU meters
Adjustable tube saturation
and 8 LED's per channel to measure the amount of tube saturation.
The GMPA also has an adjustable plate voltage that helps make your sound much crisper and cleaner (in my ears anyway).
You can go from crisp to crunchy with this unit.
(I also have an ART Pro VLA Compressor.)

Do your research, visit the websites and read reviews!
Try them both if you can.
Hope this helps! :D

PS-ART has a true channel strip called the ART Pro-Channel with Tube Pre, 4 band parametric Tube EQ along with Optical/tube compression AND Variable Mu compression selling for $319.
