Focusrite Platinum Voicemaster

Tubedude: I only need one channel since I will be recording modern, overproduced rock music where only the vocal will actually be real - at least real to start with (I need at least a couple of good lines, the producer says, and he'll take care of the rest with PT and a locker full of plug-ins. ;) BTW, you probably NEED the good stuff! :D

Blue Bear: I am sorry for going off (see above) unecessarily. I take back any personal attacks to you and will make no half-assed attempt to justify myself other than stating that I haven't had my medication today. :) This all reminds me of an old parable about a beam and a mote...

Scriabin- I love the red, personally, and if you go that route, you might wanna try the one with the preamp and compressor (Red 7?). The compressor is creamy smooth and really thick and totally indescribable til you hear it. Its not a compressor for everything, but on vocals paired with the preamp and a tlm-103, man... hard-on city. Its a sexy looking beast, too. :) The Blues are WAY too high, BUT, the isa 110 is only around $1500 I think, and I hear the EQ in it is phenomenal and dangerous.

yes I am a sheep and I bought a Focusrite Voice Master...

I tracked vocals this weekend with it and loved it. I prefer it over my Joemeek VC6 and VC1q pres.

i wished I had an avalon or something along those lines but until I do this will be my choice for vocals. you can get alot of different sounds so you defintely have to mess with it for awhile.

:)

Finally the day came where I could use it ... the Focusrite ... BUT - fighting the eternal enemy known as TIME I ended up using only the preamp ... which works great .... think I'll just keep it a couple more days, but I'll surely check out the brands all you guys came up with.

FWIW, I think the Focusrite Green Range is crap too. Never liked it, and I always thought the "Alien" industrial design was just a gimmick to cover for the fact that they were charging way too much for inferior crap. I spent a weekend with a Green pre and a Green eq, and I wished I could have that weekend back. My Sony home stereo has better eq.

Focusrite got it right on the Red Range, and their new ISA stuff kicks much ass, but the platinum and green range are easily outshined by many competitor's cheaper/better offerings.

Running a Focusrite Red pre into a Summit tube compressor is one of the highlights of my short recording career. (Of course, all interactions with the Neve board at Prairie Sun in Cotati, CA, are automatically ignored for purposes of "reality").

Damn. I always show up at these threads once all the fun is over and everyone has made friendsies.

theglitch: You'll probably notice (and you may have already) that Bruce ain't a total ass and is actually quite respected around these parts (I have no clue why). :p

Regarding vocal pres: The PreSonus VXP has gotten very good reviews. I think it sells for under $600. Supposedly has very good pre and compression circuitry. Then again, the reviewers may have been paid off...

I have had a Voicemaster for about a year - I got it at a little under dealer cost (which at the time seemd a good deal). The preamp section is in my opinion very good. However. the EQ and compression are not as good as I had hoped.

I use my Prosonus MP20 much more than the Voicemaster - but I don't dislike the Voicemaster. However, if I could do it over I would probably get the Prosonus VXP (if only I could get everything at under dealer cost).

Amen, brother.

The Focusrite Red compressor in combo with the Red pre is beautiful, it just screams tasty delicious. Truly a classy, huge sounding combo. It spoiled me for all the cheaper stuff, now I'm doomed to be a broke moron for the rest of my life.

Damnit.

I beg that you tell me who has it for $1200... please tell me... please tell me...

I saw it at Mars music in Orlando Fl. its out of the rack{display}now...Guess someone jumped on it..After they wiped off my drool!I didnt have any cash at the time...Thats always the way!
