I just finished building my vocal booth. I lined the walls with carpet and I need to add some foam. I can't afford Auralex. What type of foam would be a good substitute?

There are some cheaper no-name alternatives to Auralex. You can find links to their sites or stores on ebay. A couple of sellers I looked at were foambymail and foamforyou.

That said, foam is not what I (or most people here) would recommend. It's neither the cheapest nor the most effective. Rigid fiberglass or rockwool is much better for absorbtion, and generally cheaper too. It can be tough to find locally, and you have to wrap the stuff in fabric to keep the particles out of your lungs, but it's worth it. Tell us what area you are in and someone should be able to suggest a local supplier of Rigid Fiberglass.

The carpet that you lined your walls with will deaden high and mid range frequencies. A one or two inch layer of foam all over will kill high and mid range frequencies. See a pattern?

You don't have to cover every inch of the walls of a vocal booth but you do need to cover all frequencies. It takes thickness, particularly positioned near the corners, to kill bass. I too recommend semi-rigid fiberglass board for this but even so you want at least three or four inches of thickness.

Thanks for the response guys!! I'll go with the Semi-Rigid Fiberglass. I live in Long Beach, CA. Where can I get the fiberglass? Can I find it at Home Depot or Lowes, or any hardware store?
