Hi All,

I'm new around here and I have a few FNG type questions. Mics Mics and Mics

I'm picking up a Tascam FW1804 this week. As far as mics go I have two sm 57s and a Beta 52 that's it. I will be recording almost exclusively percussion music. My plan was to pick up a pair of small diaphragm condensers to start with. I'm leaning towards studio projects C4s or AT4031. The C4s seem to be great deal two capsules, shock mount and case. Any thoughts which mic would sound better?

Any ideas on a large diaphragm mic for just percussion? That's right no Vocals, no guitars just smacking things. I will pick up one of these some time next month.

Thanks for any input

i don't own a c4 but they apperantly are good for the money
i have a pair of ATpro37r mics that get lots of work multi percussion
i'd look at rode also

but i can personally recomend the pro37r a nice top end boost that makes hand percussion "present" but can be brittle elsware

LDC just go 4040 or 4033 (from AT) good all around budget mics
not as harsh as some of the china made models

Hi'
I misspoke yesterday. It's not the AT 4041 but the AT3041 I'm comparing to the C4s.(too many model numbers in my head sorry  ). For small living room recording are multi pattern mics needed or not.

Im I going be better served with more choices or better quality? After some reading on the web it looks like the AT4040 is a nice mic for the money but is a multi pattern LD for around the same money be a better way to go maybe a Rode NT2a .

I don't want to sink tons of cash into this, but I do want good gear.

Thanks again
Your pal Dumphuc

i think polar patterns are second to quality
i recently bought an nt2a and it REALLY likes my voice, but i havn't had much chance to try instrument micing with it so i can't really reccomend it in good concince.
