F'n FLOYD ROSE, MAN!

I got the kramer back together again. Floyd rose=coolness.

Bummer is that the arm keeps working loose. Do you use locktite or what? I would kind of prefer it to be loose and spinny, but I hate it when there is detectible play in it up and down.

This is the old original with finetuners. the arm threads in and there is a nut on top and another split one underneath. It looks like there is a nylon washer in there too. Is there a way you adjust it that I am too stupid to finger out?
 
is it one that you can convert to the arm with the colar?
 
I was looking at that. I have red and blue locktite in the garage and I am going to give the weakest one a chance first. I think this is why I shelved the thing in the first place. After wiggling for a few seconds the thing feels like bad wheel bearings in a trailer.
 
Someone mentioned in another thread that everyone should have a Strat, and A Les Paul.

I would add a Floyd equipped guitar to that also. It's just plain fun.

look at the bootom side of the trem, if it is one that can be changed you will see (usually an allen head bolt) at the bottom where the bar goes in, if that is there it is a 5 min job, you can buy the arm with the collor and the insert reasonably cheap, you just unscrew the allen head and the insert just punches out

I was doing it wrong. I tightened up the bar to the top nut, then tried to set the bottom nut to the correct tightness. Last night I was looking at it. I ended up tightening the collar up so that when the arm was tight, it was pointed 180 degrees behind playing position. then when it was in playing position it was spinny loose the way I like it. There is just a little perceptible play in the arm.

Now I have to address the nut issue so i can get the action down on this. I already have other guitars set up for tone. I want one set up to shred.
 
I like Floyd the barber. He was gay as shit. Oh, and floyd rose's fucking rock mang.
 
When people complain about the maintenance and setup of floyds and say that is why they'd never have one, it's like saying you'll never get on a roller coaster because you can't drive it to work.

It's about the fun, man. Spaghetti strings and dragster noises are fun.

I am totally going to rout some relief in the top. This thing barely raises the G string a half-step. I want that cool sitar bend that's like a step and a half.

Well, I won't get on a roller coaster because my mom took me on one when I was four and I still have nightmares about it.

Why/how is a FR better than a Strat trem?

You know the answer to that one....or are you just baiting somebody so you can tell them that they don't know how to set up a strat trem properly? :p
 
Floyd Rose systems are great. It does take a little bit of work to learn how to set them up properly, but it really isn't all that difficult. If you want to dive bomb and do whatever you want with the trem without going out of tune, I don't know of a better system. I personally like the feel much better than a vintage trem, and there is a lot bigger range on a Floyd. They obviously aren't for everyone, because not everyone needs to do the things the Floyd is best at. I love them though, and most all of my guitars have them.

Not better, but very different. Like if i play a guitar without the floyd, I play guitar. But when I play the guitar with the floyd, I rpetty much play the whammy bar all the time. :D

No, actually. I have an old Strat with a stock trem that's set up great for my purposes, but I've never played around with a Floyd Rose.
 
Who uses a vintage strat trem for dive bombs?

I know there is a way to get a special nut and graphite the nut and get locking tuners, and then after you use it you jerk the trem bar up to re-tune the strings. Who still does this?
 
I do it on one of my strats. It works. When you pull back on the bar, you yank all the slack from where it's stored between the saddles and block and nut and tuners.

For weird trem sounds, a floyd can't beat strumming up above the nut and pushing down the bar with your left hand. that is full on lock ness monster noises.

Okay, well sorry for sounding like a smart ass.

For subtle usage of the bar, a vintage style trem can be more than sufficient, but if you are more adventurous a Floyd will take whatever you throw at it and stay in perfect tune. In a full floating configuration, you also have the added benefit of being able to raise your pitch pretty drastically...depending on how brave you are.
I find a Floyd style trem more sensitive and smoother in operation too.

Of course you've also got crazy dive bombs, screaming harmonics, horse whinneys, and cricket chirps to be thrown out at your discretion. :D

I use a bone nut, graphite string tree, and some gunk I make from Teflon grease and graphite that I put in the nut slots when I change the strings. It comes back in tune when I release the bar, no jerking up needed, though it is set up so that I can pull it a whole step sharp.

What about your tuners? This can be accomplished with just a normal strat set up?

I mean your not going to be able to hold the trem bar down to the body, wouldn't that cause the 6 screws going to the body to come unattached?
