It is possible to make a floor multi-effect(that acclaim to emulates sounds of tube amps) sounding like an all-tube amp?? I have a Korg AX1500G guitar modeling processor,Crate 900H Excalibur( build with FlexWave technology that acclaim to emulate a valve in the pre-amp section),Crate cabinet4X12, and no matter how I squeeze that Korg I've never obtained that creamy and warm distorsion from Mesa or Marshall.

There is a reason why certain amps are revered for their tone. Some modelers can work for recording certain things, but for the feel of a loud tube amp, you have to use a..... loud tube amp. That's all there is to it.

Mike, I succeeded somehow by using a Digitech RP20 (?) (it's the gold one, I'm not sure whether it was the 12,14, 20 or 21)

Anyway, it has a 12AX7 in its pre-amp section and sounds way more natural to me than the Boss GT-3 (which I have owned and tweaked for 5 years, and came pretty close for Deep Purple/AC/DC alike tube-sounds (e.g. Marshall).

I was selling the GT-3, and was considering the RP20 as its replacement, but then I figured the damn board was so big that it wouldn't fit in the toolbox I bought specifically for the GT-3. Also I don't use all that spacey/slicy fx-crap. I consider it 'special' if I'd use a flanger...

Anyway, I was pretty impressed by the RP20's different pre-amp sims and its chorus. Even the small RP7 (which I had loaned for a little while) was pretty o.k.

If you play metal, dont even sweat it. Dimebag goes straight for those solid state Randall Warheads....

True, a lot of the faster types of metal 'need' a SS amp, since a tube-amp CAN sound kinda sloppy, when playing 16ths at 248bpm (Slayer-Necrophobic).

Most death and thrashmetal bands use SS amps (Laney)

BTW, Mike, if anything, I wouldn't consider Mesa Boogie as 'creamy' (or you're referring to the older Mark series).
Creamy= Marshall JCM800 + MXR Dist Plus
Creamy=ANY ENGL amp

Hello guys!I understand what you are talking about ,but how come I,ve never seen a big name playing with floor multi-fx pedals(Boss gt3 or gt6,Korg,Digitech),and about amps maybe Dimebag and Scott Ian are the only ones using solid state amps .Kerry King(Slayer) use a Marshall: "Favorite Piece of Gear It has to be this Marshall head, King says of his 100-watt Marshall 2203.I've never found anything else as nut-crunching as these things. When I stand in front of my rig I need to feel my nuts shaking, and the only amps that can do that are my Marshalls" (http://www.guitarworld.com/gearrevi..._kerryking.html). Metallica use to play very fast on their first albums and they use only Mesa and Marshall. Some friends of mine told me that the big names spend thousands of $$$ just because they have what to spend, and for the publicity(like they said: "Because it looks cooler to have all that stuff when they are on page 42 of Guitar World").But I don't think so...Who is so fool to spend 15.000$ when you can have the same SOUND with 1000$ ???

If you can't hear the difference, then there isn't a difference. If you can hear the difference, then you're going to have to buy the Marshall or the Boogie.

Good luck on trying to get anything to sound like a Boogie, except a Boogie. I've been doing this for a long time, and every year or so there is a new, improved yada yada that they say sounds just like a Boogie. Only they never do!

So kids who don't know any better but don't want to wait until they've saved up enough to afford a Boogie go out and spend their hard-earned cash on a poor imitation - and get creamed when they trade their p.o.s. in the next year 'cos now they can hear the difference.

As for why do the 'stars' get the most expensive stuff, there are two reasons (and I used to work in the largest music store in South London selling it to 'em):

They know what they're listening to and can afford it

They buy them as stage props - I once sold a very well known band ten Marshall 4 x 12 Cabs to go out on tour - with no speakers in them.
The guitar player had a blackface deluxe reverb and a blackface twin with an A/B box miked up behind the stacks.

Mike, Kerry King's tone cannot be tossed in the same corner as say a Dimebag Darrell or Scott Ian.
Slayer was always one of the few thrashmetal bands with A LOT of midrange in their sound, opposed to the popular 'scooped mid' sound, like heard from Metallica.

There are tons of lesser known thrash and death-metal bands that play on SS amps. But yeah, saying that you play a $4000 Mesa sounds way cooler than doing most of your studio-tracks on a $400 Crate.

Also, the Marshall JCM800 2203 as heard by Kerry King, Zakk Wylde and Angus Young (amongst others) is totally incomparable to later Marshalls. Especially that sucky JCM900, which single-handedly destroyed Marshall's fame.

If you wanna hear what a Marshall is SUPPOSED to sound like, check some Engl amps.
