What does THIS button do?
haha I know the general rule of recording is to track it right... well.. I'm recording this band and thier vocalist is kind of, well..... eh.
I'm thinking about trying to use some kind of distortion plug in on his voice and a toutch of reverb but I don't know what else I might be able to do. If anyone knows any tricks for using plugins or whatever on the vocals please let me know. Thanks!

Why not put his vocal track through a vocoder? That could be fun.

If he's only a LITTLE off, add some compression distortion....gives that vintagey rock sound while squeezing some of the poopy oiut of the voice.....only prob is it don;t always sound good in the song.

Thanks! He said he thinks he can do better on it and this weekend he might try to redo some stuff.. only problem is the guitarist is giving me a deadline (monday) and we've been working a long long time on this I just want to get it done. I guess I will see what I can fix and what he needs to redo... Thanks though guys.

P.S. whats a vocoder?

Vocoder....Its like a talkbox, right?

And WTF is he doing giving you a deadline. Tell him to fuck himself, and if his singer wasn't such a shit, it'd be done. If he doesn;t like it, take his buisness elsewhere.
I realize that is bad customer service, but fuck that. Its your shit, not his.

hahaha I should but if you think about it the more time they want to dick around with it 'fixing' stuff, the more I get paid, right? ;)

Just be honest with the guitar player and say that the singer is having some difficulties and you wanna get it smoothed out.

Telling him that it will make his record miles better to get the vocals right should pursuade him. If it doesn't then the guitar player is a dildo also.

As a vocalist I can tell you that being a good singer, and being a good recording vocalist are two TOTALLY different things. The guitar player probably doesn't know that. And if he does, then he already knows his singer sucks anyhow.

Well, in the past I've loaded my very horrible vocals recorded right next to my horribly loud computer into a sampler (mostly spoken stuff though), and did some wild pitch modulations with LFO, ring modulation, distortion and frequency shifting... after I was done with it, I sounded like a combination of Darth Vader and the Borg Collective :D The kicker is... it actually worked in the tune!

hahaha this is the deal. I mixed some of it down and it doesn't sound too bad so I'm going to make a copy minus vocals just for the vocalist so he can practice and then a copy with everything for the rest of the guys to listen to. I figure, a little bit of reverb (and when I say a little I mean very very little) and some light distortion and he doesn't sound that bad. To tell you the truth guys I am playing drums for this project and I am kind of just letting these kids get stuff done on thier own. I showed them some recording techniques and they did pretty good. Instrumentally, it sounds amazing I am really surprized with the turnout. Vocally... well.... we might be looking for a new vocalist soon heh.

Hahaha! Thats excellent. You should call your band "Shaving Chewbacca"

have the singer chuck Nyquil and get one track before he collapses. It'll be fun even if he doesnt make it a suck job

is he off key?

if you don't have autotune...best thing is to automate a pitch shifter. if he's flat..automate the cents to go up a bit for that note
