Fix it in the mastering?

If your not satisfied with your mixing skills, why would you want to learn to master? Seems crazy to me.....

It's amazing to see how many clients we have that don't understand the basic aspects of mixing and mastering. One thing that is apparent is the need for loudness. Everybody wants their track louder than the other guy. We get mixes that people want mastered that top out at 0db. I always recommend that the client have us professionally mix the project but everyone thinks they can do it themselves because they have a few cool plugins. I think Tom's point is that you cannot really compare your skills with someone who has been doing this for 20 years. It takes years to grasp the concept of sound and how it reacts in different environments.

I'm having very similar issues lately..feeling good about my mixes... until i listen to Tool...then i assume my mixes are crap. I just spoke to someone at a well known mastering studio though, and the guy basically told me that as long as my frequencies are in the right places, they can handle the rest... I feel shitty about it because while i would love to send my album out there... its too damn expensive, and ultimately the way that I took it was... don't feel shitty if your mixes lack the shine... it can be polished in the mastering... (so now, i'm reading the mastering engineers handbook heh heh)
