Seriously? That was done on a 414? This is incredible! I can't believe my ears... the recording sounds great!

Thanks! Yeah it went like this:

Track 1: acoustic, her lead vox, and my harmony vox all live with one mic
Track 2: her overdubbed low vocals while I did shaker
Track 3: her double vocal on track 3 while I played the "xylo-pupophone" (my son's toy puppy-shaped xylophone)
Track 4: her harmony vocal while I played organ

I did bring it into the computer to add reverb, because I couldn't get something out of my Quadraverb that sounded any good (I may end up getting rid of that thing), but that was it.

I call shenanigans!:D Wow, was that really from a 414? Sounds very nice.;) Good job man.

The recording sounds awesome. Your wife has a beautiful voice.

Excellent! :)

Very nicely performed and mixed!

I too am amazed this came from a 414!

Your wife's voice reminds me a bit of Pat Benatar's! She has talent!

About the only thing that seemed a bit off was the eq treatment of her voice which seemed a bit too edgy around the 2khz range...maybe this was the mic selection or something else? Beyond that, I'm totally impressed!

Cheers! :)

jjones: No shenanigans really! :) (except for the reverb from Tracktion) I made sure to smoothly fade out tracks when they weren't being used to keep down on the noise. Mixdown was a jumbled affair! :)

dodgeaspen: Thanks! Yes I think she does too. :)

Ghost: Thanks for the kind words. Never heard the Pat Benetar comparison with my wife's voice before; I'll have to listen to that. I know exactly what you mean about the EQ on her vocal. I struggled with that, but her lead vocal was on the same track as the acoustic (as well as my harmony), so I couldn't mess with one without messing with the other. I tried to find the best compromise, but maybe I should try again. We recorded that first track with an Octava MC-012--->DMP3--->414. The recording was really just for fun at first (which is why we were just using the one mic), but when it turned out as good as it did, we decided to flesh it out more.

Well, I did use the words "a bit like Pat Benatar", not a dead ringer for her. ;)

About the idea of re-mixing or re-eq'ing, I wouldn't go through all that based on my comments alone. I only gave this a listen on my computer speakers which are no where near a perfect reference for judging these sorts of things. No one else mentioned this either so it probably isn't as noticeable as what I indicated.

Cheers! :)

Great recording Chad...

Beautifully done Chad. I believe it was done on a 414. If you plan and use good technique and equipment you can make any cassette multitrack recording sound stellar. Me and my wife have messed around with my old Tascam 424 with just a tube pre and a nice condenser and we've gotten good little recordings from it. Great for songwriting demo's...

Thanks John. Yeah it's actually really fun to work within the confines of a 4-track. I find that I end up coming up with some ideas that I probably wouldn't otherwise. Neccessity is the mother and all that.

By the way, I checked out your soundclick page, and that's some very good stuff! It's remarkable how similar our influences are. I enjoyed the listen thoroughly. :)

Thanks Chad. I really dug your stuff too. It's nice having wives who sing and support us isn't it?;)

well done

your girl should get a whole track for herself ..great voice! oh and your not so bad yourself great job.

Really nice job on the recording/mixdown. It just underlines all the comments about analogue being warmer and having a warmer richer and more personal sound than digital.
