This is my first try at recording something decent. I have played around before but this is the first one I have tried to work with after it was recorded at all. I still don't like or know how to fix the bass sound. The acoustic could use some more life but I only have a MXL 909 mic and a EV cobalt CO4 (sm57 copy) to record with so I am still limited. I am not a very good guitar player and I am a worse bass player so be gentle. Its nowhere near the other stuff I hear on here.

Maybe I made it sound worse than it is? I mean its not that bad somebody can comment on it right?
 
LOL - it's Saturday afternoon and everyone is out....

Great first recording for this clinic you should have heard my catastrophe a few years ago ....

There are two extremely different guitar tones going on here. Although they have good merit they are panned quite far apart and lack a togetherness. Perhaps panning closer would help.

The distorted rhythm guitar is a bit thin sounding (for me). It sounds like it could benefit from a bit more speaker volume and a little less gain.

The third guitar tone - electric lead is perfect. No changes required there. The stereo panning on the guitar is a la rayc - check out his productions for some cool vibes.

The clarity is really good on the recording. You have been successful at capturing the instruments especially the acoustic guitar.

The song doesn't ring a bell - is it original? Are there any plans to add vocals or drums later on?

NO vocals from me. Anybody have any interest in adding some vocals or maybe a better lead. I will work on the panning and possible the distorted guitar part.
 
the bass sounds muddy. it's nearly all lower frequencies. did you cut the upper frequency stuff out? the acoustic guitar sounds like it was recorded pretty well. i agree on the electric guitar having too much gain. the acoustic and bass are your bed tracks but you need something of interest up front to move the song along (a melody). the electric guitar comes in and out kind of randomly and doesn't really hold my interest. also, something to carry a beat would be nice: drums, congas, shaker.........anything would be better than nothing.

i would:

find a melody
use the electric guitar for the melody or find a vocalist
lose some gain on the electric guitar and thicken it up a bit
use the full frequency spectrum of the bass, maybe lose some low end too
add some percussion

1- find a melody--- this goes back to my inability to play a melody very well.
2- use the electric guitar for the melody or find a vocalist-- I can't sing
3- lose some gain on the electric guitar and thicken it up a bit- I will definitely play with this. The EV cobalt CO4 picks up things kinda grainy so maybe this will help with that.

add some percussion-- I don't know if its the amp or what but I just can't get the bass to sound good. that is the actual sound that I am recording. I am a terrible bass player. maybe I can put the acoustic and the electric parts on here and somebody can add to them. Any takers? I wish I could sing and play lead.


Thanks for the suggestions. I ordered two behringer c-2 mics to record the acoustic in stereo. I know they are not that good of mics but I am on a low budget here and trying to learn so that later on when I have some $$ I can get the real deal and know how to use it..

The song is original. It is my only adventure into an open tuning that is worth anything. I struggle very much with melodies and leads but I am fairly good at tones and such. I will eventually be a much better engineer or soundman type than a guitar player but this is my first step. I hate the bass sound on this but thats really what it sounds like and so far I can't get it to sound like what I want coming through the amp. Its a nice bass but just a cheap Laney amp.
 
for now i'd take some low end off the bass. that should clean it up some.

i struggle with melodies too, which i didn't realize until recently. it's something so basic and should be one of the first skills learned in music but i seem to be ass backwards when it comes to all this stuff. :p

if you want some percussion, i'll add some or hopefully someone that knows more about what they're doing might add some (i'll be your last resort). :D
 
My only worry with someone adding percussion would be that they find out I sped up or slowed down during the song :confused: . I don't think that I did but we'll see. Whats the best way to put files up so that people can add things to them? MP3? Wav? I don't have any way to add drums. I have tried looping without success. If anybody has a specific section they can work on for me let me know and I will remove the one that I have and post it again.

I don't think the distortion guitar has the power it should have, maybe add more low end. The solo works though, the panning is nice, hell it sounds like something you'd hear in the background of some romantic-comedy during the downer part.
 
Thats what I was going for... the love scene. :o . damn.. I can't tell you how nice it is to have people that will listen and critique.
 
let me take out the bass and then repost and then someone can add a bass and some drums for me.
 
I can't quite get the guitar right.. right now its layered in two different tracks and I think its more full but I just don't like it. Somebody throw some drums on here and let me see what they would sound like and some bass. I will eventually get the guitar right and then we can finish it up. I took some of the rumble out of the acoustic as well it was clipping.

 
I think now the overdriven guitar is too much. I want to take it back in the mix a little.
