First Tracks, is a rock instrumental.
the idea is a pristine setting on a snow covered mountain, bluebird day, champagne powder, first tracks.

this is an unmastered first mix-
i used Har-Bal on this file, as an experiment, 1st time user.

i just put down a brand new bass line to this last night...
using my new 'baby bass'
i split a signal two ways from my sansamp bass di- one direct to the mic pre, with a bit of deep eq from the sansamp, and one to my mesa, set a little dirty on the clean channel, with a direct feed from the mesa to a palmer pdi-09, and then direct to a mic pre and convertor.

i'd like to have some comments on both the mix elements, and the eq overall.....
to get a feel for whether or not what i've done with this har-bal program is working or not.
thanks!

Nice work!

I detect a touch of the Satriani in there, so this is alright by me.

Overall I found the playing, the arrangement and the mix satisfying. I like the change of feel around the two minute mark.

I particularly liked the way everything got pulled back at abouut 3.20. For a while I thought that bit precedding was going to be too long . . . it finished just in time.

well ive waxed both my boards waiting for the first snows...hopefully tremblant in 3 weeks..

Ive download this song and will play it on my first run before I comment on the mix :)

cheers!

Just sat back and enjoyed it. Sounds great. And I really like the BDG 'neat' second part....reminds me a lot of Jimi's Rainbow Bridge recordings at Electric Lady just before he died.....and never got the chance to over-produce to oblivion. Love the work and the playing and the musical taste. 10

ALRIGHT MAN, thanks for kicking this off....
i guess satch is gonna sneak in there no matter what!
LOL

kcearl-
tremblant, sweet.
i've never skied anywhere in canada except in BC, at whistler.
i'd love to go there some day.

here in the cottonwood canyons, Alta and Snowbird will be kickin' off this week.
but i doubt i'll get first tracks there!!!
heheh

jeffmaher-
thanks, glad you dig it.
jimi's rainbow bridge, you know i saw a video about that recently....
appreciate the listen.

on an immediate level it sounds great ...i was pleased when you left that safe double tracked zone to explore some hendrix style riffs...that sounded cool...in the back of my mind i thought wouldnt it be great if a cool dry vocal came in over that to elevate from some self indulgent noodling onto the higher plane.

Sweet sound man, just love your instrumentals dude. Nice sounding bass too. Ever thought about doing tracks for like a fighting game or something? lol

zazz-
hey, immediately, i gotta say thanks!!

hehe
glad you dig it....
you know, i hadn't thought about trying to apply a lyric, and melody to it, because the melody of the lead part is so strong...
but you know, if i lost the entire 1st half solo, and wrote a couple of verses and a chorus, then let it morph into the 2nd half solo, that MIGHT be pretty cool!
i just may have to try that....

ninja-
hey man, got your tracks ready.....
will be sending a ling soon.

ok, on this one, yeah, some folks have mentioned 'gaming' tunes to me before....
i have so many tunes like this one, but i wouldn't have a clue how they'd fit into some xbox type thing....
i'd be up for it tho!!
LOL

Sounds very good, mix and performance. I personally would take the bass guitar down a tad. Other than that it rocks.

Analytical Man
thanks for listening..

take the bass down, really?
you're the first to say that in particular...
is it just too loud, or is there a particular freq that sticks out?

what are you listening on?

This is fantastic. I'm instantly attracted to the guitar solos, very nice. You've also got a great bass sound. The drums are nice and clear. Nice changes of feel throughout.

It sounds very slightly muddy, but that's probably just being fussy, cause I wouldn't be able to get the sound any better than that on a home recording. Great job.

Great stuff man, awesome guitar work!
Personally I would make the kick and bass a bit less boomy and add some punch to them so they can "drive" the groove a bit more. I would also bring the snare forward and make it louder in the mix as it is sitting too far in the background imo. Very nice sounding stuff nevertheless, just nitpicking on what I would have done if it was my mix.

kazza-
thanks for listening.....
slightly muddy, i don't doubt it..
part of it, is the choice to have the drums be in such a 'big' room.
but, that was a decision i made at the onset, so i've kinda had to mix to that element, and when you don't listen to big rooms very often, it sounds kinda weird.
i'm trying to dial in the low end better, to make it less muddy.....thanks!

cobi-
thanks for checking it out cobi-wan....
yep, same answer as above, i can tweak the eq a bit, to give more punch, less lows...
but having that psuedo 'zeppelin' drum sound, makes it a bit boomy.
i can bring out the snare a bit on the stereo track with a spiky eq boost, but what about the hi hats?
to my ears, they're too hot in the mix.... i'm afraid bringing the snare up will just add to that problem..
the drums are already submixed down to a stereo pair, i don't have access to that program..

last shot at reviewing this one, before i try to re-master it..
any comments are welcome
