I just started playing drums and I just picked up a CAD Premium 7-Piece Drum Microphone Pack, a SM57, and Tascam 1614.

During my first few tries at recording, everything seems to be hooked up and doing well, but my kick drum mic's volume is really low compaired to the rest of the mics.

I have heard the kick drum mic from this set isn't the best, but since I am just starting drums/recording I really don't need high dollar setups, but I do wonder if the kickdrums mic needs to be upgraded or if there is some tips you could give me on this issue?

The kick drum mic is a KBM412 and I am using Cubase 5.

Thanks in advance.

Check your mic cable and placement. My drummer uses either 20' or 22' bass drums with holes in the front heads, I place the mic just outside the drum pointed at the beater for really good impact with a touch of air. Unlike a lot of bass drum mics the KBM412 is fairly flat so a 4-6db bump about 450Hz is in order and i also add a touch of compression. The KBM412 is actually a pretty good bass drum mic and for other things no matter what 'they' say, I have 3 of them and really like them. You might also like the Ksm411 on snare over a 57 it's smaller and easier to position.

I would check the mic cable. If the track sounds thin then you probably have a cable issue. The KBM412 should give you plenty of boom. Swap out the cable and test it out.

Um, I'd listen very carefully to your own sound before you follow this advice.

450hz is usually a shit zone for kick drums. Most of the better kick drum specific mics trim this frequency out right from the factory. Bumping the EQ that much in that range would normally give you a pretty crappy kick sound.

Thanks I'll move it around a bit, last time I tested it I put the damn thing into the bass drum about 4".

I never would of thought a cable would cause these kinda issues, I figured it would either work or not work. LOL Thanks, tomorrow I'll try one of my other cables..

Here's the freq graph for it if it helps.

edit....crap...something about a file extension, whatever that is.
