I had a hard time finding small boards by Allen & Heath. I'll take another look around.

Thanks for all the valuable input, btw.

Edit: They've got some beautiful mixers, but they're way out of my price range.

I have a Yamaha MG 10/2, and I think that the preamps sound fine on it. I use MXL 993s, MXL 990, and an SM57. The pres dont have a whole lot of headroom, but they provide plenty of clean and clear gain. Plus the routing options that you gain from a mixer are very valueable. I can use my mixer to record and monitor, and it has 4 XLR ins with phantom power. Great little board, and it sounds about perfect for what you're wanting. And its well-priced at $100.

I'm starting to look very seriously at the 10/2, but there's only one problem I've come up with so far:

How am I supposed to flip the phase if so necessary?

Yeah, as far as I know, none of the small boards have phase switches. You could make a few phase inversion cables, and plug those in if necessary.

Ah, wonderful. I'll get our rhythm guitarist to do it. He's very good with electronics.

Does the phase need to be flipped before the preamp or can it be done after?

if you flip it before the preamp then all the inserts ( if there are any ) and aux outputs and any other sends for that particular will be flipped as well. if you flip it afterwards that obviously won't be the case.

That shouldn't matter, I don't think, unless you're combining channels to one track. As long as you're monitoring it after the phase flip, you'd be ok.
