Laj,

Finally getting around to my questions.:)

1. You say "German Wind..." was done in FL. I hear some familiar samples in the other two. How were these sequenced? With the Triton?

2. What did you use to make the liquidy animal sounds in "Czentre" (starting at 0:07). They sound very much like the old Buchla I used to play around with in college. Morton Subotnick has a lot of these kinds of sounds on his record "Until Spring". Have you heard it?

3. Where did the 'Frog and the Princess' track come from in "Streams"? That is an absolutely wonderful intro!

Thanks,
barefoot

Barefoot, good ears man. I guess maybe I need to get better at hiding where my sounds came from. On both "Streams" and "Czentre" there is a bit of sequencing that goes on within the Triton and a bunch more tracks that contain sounds from the Triton as well. Alos did a lot of sampling into the Triton and tweaking away within. So I guess the sounds are a pretty good mix between sampled stuff (very random sounds mind you) and edited programs within the Triton.

Those liquidy voice type sounds are also a program within the Triton, called Venusian Stories. Mind you I got it just right late, late one night and it's hard to reconjure EXACTLY what I tweaked but suffice to say I did a lot of processing of fx, filter, etc. on it and when the sound was subtle enough I used the "scratch pad" to initiate/inunciate each sound. I thought it worked out pretty cool sounding in the end.

The "frog and princess" sample came off an old Kermit The Frog fairy tale record that I found on one of my second-hand store record scouring adventures. We use Korg's Kaoss mixer and it allowes for some really messed up sounds. The record is actuall spun in reverse and subtly continues throughout the whole song. Originally there was some Mandarin Chinese lessons in there to but it kinda muddled everything up more than was desired.

Hey barefoot, I appreciate you taking the time and thought regarding my stuff, it's very much appreciated!

Well after all, I am a music listening and sampling freak. But you do have to be careful. Ambient music producers and listeners are a fairly small, close knit, and dedicated community. We're probably far more likely to recognize the origin of a thinly disguised sample than the average folk.

Nice. The "scratch pad" makes sense for the Buchla effect you got. The original Buchla's had touch sensitive pads with which you could articulate sounds. They were exposed circuit traces which actually passed a small current through your skin. Your skin resistance would change depending on the pressure and surface area of your touch. The resulting voltage change could control a filter or oscillator. Crazy, huh?! :)

Barefoot,

Nice info man, truly interesting schtuff, any good site/related links? I do really appreciate all your thoughts and comments barefoot, been a good confidence booster, need assurance of validity sometimes, in however miniscule amounts as available.

Laj,

Here are a couple links: http://www.synthmuseum.com/buchla/buc10001.html
http://csunix1.lvc.edu/~snyder/em/subotnick.html

That Buchla 100 is like the one I got to play with in school. Patch cord city! You feel like an old time switchboard operator when your using it. But the sounds are amazing - phatt, earthy, and organic. Wish I had one of my own.

spacedye,

I can't seem to download your music. I can't stream audio here at work because I'm behind a firewall, and I don't want to install whatever it is soundclick wants me to install in order to download the mp3. Any alternative site?

Barefoot,

Many thanks for the links and the info in general. I wish I could play around with one of those puppies for a few weeks, bet there's some intense stuff pumped outa there. They look alot like the one that Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead uses for "Idioteque," just like an old operator's patchbay, definitely cool stuff. Thanks again everybody for listening and will be posting soon with some final editing of these tunes and probably a couple others.

laj this is some nice stuff man! you make me jealous, haha...

hey can you guys recommend stuff that is in the same style as laj's stuff? cheers...

Lucid,

I haven't seen Laj around here in maybe 6 months. Not sure if he's still posting or not?

Yeah, his stuff is good.

Something similar in style to his music is Future Sound of London. Start out with the CDs "Lifeforms" and "ISDN" - absofuckinglutely outsanding! The there's The Orb. Check out "Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld" and "Orblivion".

If you dig this stuff then there's lot more great ambient and downtempo electronica to explore!

cool stuff, reminds me of nightime, wind blowing about 5 knots and gusting, fire in the dunes, as ya get closer its a big fire, lots of ppl half naked, trance dancing, sacrifice ritual n stuff, as you get closer and it builds to a frenzy it all stops and they look at you...... a big blast at the end would be super..

I like it, imagery

Damn Toki, you need to get yourself to Burningman next year!:D

Fruity-liscous

Coool...very serene and thoughtful,my 4yr old and I listened to the 3 tracks while we colored. He liked it too.I give the Fruity Loops 3.4 a 4star rating ,easy to get started easy to comprehend and a real fun and intense program. You've done well Obi-Wan.Your song structure is free like ambient music should be and the experimental one was my least favorite, but still worthy of praise.I liked your false peaks and build ups to nowhere

Great, original stuff, really enjoyed the listen, so thanks!

I think you need great courage to do this, that is to sculpt and layer sounds this way, consciously avoiding falling into repetitive chord sequences and becoming too 'structured' as it were.

There is great skill on display here, no doubt, and I'll be grabbing everything new you put up on this BBS without hesitation.

My only personal criticism would be track length, I found the songs a touch overlong, which sometimes meant they dissolved into musak as my mind wandered to other things.

However, I do have the attention span of a fruit fly, so prolly best ignore me :D

cheers

Wait till y'all hear the newest jams

Hey there,

Suprised and really pleased to see that anybody has checked out my stuff. We've veered from all out ambient tracks to stuff that's more rythym based, though still in the FSOL/Orb vein. I have scads of various recordings from jam sessions, a couple house parties we played, etc. We have a pretty solid set we are putting together and I'd love to throw some MP3s up for you guys to check out, sorry I wasn't here to thank you guys for listening earlier, been busy:)
