hi guys,
its time for me to hang out more often in this section,
i finally started recording bands again, after months of messing around,

i quickly recorded my drumkit yesterday, ran it trough a software limiter
to push up the volume (overdid it a bit but still OK i think)

compressors are
DBX166a (toms), 166XL (kick, floortom), tc triple c on overheads, joemeek vc8 on snare,

oktava MK012 on overheads
beyer m201 on snare
sennheiser e602 on kick
sm57's on toms
m421 on floortom

all sound ran trough an old studiomaster sessionmix 16:4:2
with the compressors on the inserts,
and the outputs of the compressors go to the soundcard
(i split the signal with a patchbay so the compressor outs go to the MOTO soundcard AND to the insert returns of mixing desc)

soundcard : moto828, 5 channels recorded,

i got a sqare room with some blankets on one wall,
this saturday i'm gonna record a punk band in here,

so this is kinda the drumsound i'll get, but the drummer is gonna bring his Pearl kit, sounds better than my sonor force2000

----

so you notice any real bad things?
you notice a "fuckup" in this mp3 sample? (yeah, i'm not a pro drummer, i know, its all about the sound,K)
too much bass on the kick?

i bet there's too much limiting on it overal, but i'm gonna do that more prudent during the real mixdown,

or rightclick+save-as on this index page: http://www.belgianunderground.com

thanks in advance !

auch,
just noticed something, i accidentally had the High frequencies button
on my Triple C boosted WAY too hard on the overheads,
cymbals sound....too fresh...maybe not harsh yet, but close...

pesonally don't like the overall sound.......snare is kinda thin, kick sounds like a big o' bubble, if that makes any since, lol.

interesting and its true,
can't get my kick to sound good in "real life" either,
thats where it starts,
this week i'm gonna work on it

you make me work harder, thats good!
keep the critisism coming :)

Its tough to make a call without hearing what type of mix the kit will be sitting in. Listening on headphones so take this for what its worth

-Snare sounds thin, needs more bottom
-Kick is overly tubby, this is probably more of a mic placement/tuning/muffling thing. Your definitely going to need more attack/click and less bottom for the punk band.
-Toms have a nice amount of attack, sound like they lack bottom.
-Overall it has a "small" room vibe, but that could totally work in the right context.

hope this helps

The only way I could judge the drums would be in the context of a particular song. I did notice the compressor pumping (not in a good way).

Yea I could hear the compressor too... But like Track said it is hard to judge...

Kick sounds too much like a low tom, too much low-mids I guess, also seems to be clipping a tad bit, or a little distorted. And like whoever said, snare is definately too thin, toms have way too much attack, it sounds like theyve got no low or mids at all. fix it.

I think the toms sound fine. The kick just sounds like it needs a blanket or something.

the kick for me is ringy, snare too thin, toms sound way off and dead. It almost sounds as if it was 2 mics in a room. I don't try to be mean. :) It's just too open sounding for me.

u guys aren't bad in "guessing" how i tweaked my EQ,

indeed, i had the bad habit of cutting lots of bass and lowmids of my toms cause for a long time i didn't have compressors on them and i tried to avoid clipping by....getting rid of bottom end...

the kick, i put an extra boom-arm on a micstand so now the kickmic can really go into the kickdrum, so its real close to the batter,
wasn't able to do that before cause never had the right kickstands,

do u guys use a small "table top" stand for that?

its all recorded in a small room, the overheads were way too high above the drumkit so you hear too much of my accaustically-untreated little square room...

i've got a new mix now, with different miking techniques, eq settings, compressors, sounds more solid, powerful,

the kick even sounds good this time, snare is more powerful,
couldn't get a nice sound out of my snare trough that joemeek,
but blame ME of course

about the compressor you hear work, is that on the overal mix?
think i ran it trough a limiter and might have pushed it a bit...too hard,
true, sounds different in a mix,

don't u guys like hearing compression on drums? like a bit of pumping effect?

i know i always over-do things when i first start doing something,
i'm learning alot,
the more critics you give me, the faster my heart beats, the more pissed i get and the more i wanna change my rotten sound

:D i even dislike that soundsample now,
next week i'll be able to post FULL songs i recorded with the same gear,
i know there's already a big difference,
but trying to make a "decent" mixdown now...
what i'm affraid of already is that you'll hear the drums pumping a bit...
will post as soon as i can

u guys rock!
