i just got a pair of mxl 603's' which i bought mainly for recording my accoustic. just had my first practice atemt at recording a bit of guitar and i thought id post the results up on here for some constructice critisismt and advice. im quite happy with the way it sounds. i placed the mices with one near the bridge and one on the 16th/17th fret both about7 or 8 inches away from the guitar. i put a bit of EQ on there mainly just boosting the low and high mid by about 10% then i just put a bit of compression on there. i didnt pan at all, i messed around with panning but found that it sounded best all in the centre which is weird cos i asumed that a sterio pair would lend them selves well to panning, is this usual or am i missing something?

any way heres the link to the audio http://soundcloud.com/rick-woodall/sterio-pair-acoustic-trial

all advice welcome

cheers

It does sound pretty good--but you're right for being surprised that it sounds better with both tracks centered. Panning left and right (often HARD left and right) is the usual for an acoustic with a stereo pair.

To my ears, what sounds so good about your recording is the tone and the playing--both top notch. But it does have a slight nasal, mono quality to it. I'd like to hear it panned hard L & R. Maybe you should post that as well and let us compare. Might be interesting to see if we hear it the same way you do.

i just realised that i had my patch mix set up with the left and right centred on my cubas output, so all i was doing when i was panning before was turning it down. how would you recomend having the panning set on an out put? iv just put them on hard L&R. any way now that embarising mistake has been fixed heres a stereo version, if you could tell me what it sounds like through your speakers it would be much apreciated as mine are a pile of crap(£15 supermarket efforts) http://soundcloud.com/rick-woodall/sterio-pair-acoustic-trial-pan-l-r

I thought I was losing my mind. This sounds like a mono track to me.

On stereo mics pan them wide LR, especially on a fine solo piece like this - please.

What WhiteStrat said. This new track still aint there.

What format is it in at this site? Is it .mp3 or something else? What bitrate?

not sure really, i would asume that for it to be mp3 i would have to convert it prior to uploading it. its definitely not the same quality as the origional audio.

Sounds like an excellent recording - seems suffered from a not so good
mp3 quality - just to confirm what you think about it.
Try another hoster, like Soundclick or other.

(Nice playing,congrats!)

yea, maybe it is converting to mp3, it souds like a similar difference to when i used to upload things to my space. cheers for the compliment mate
