I've been a long time lurker here and after reading through every single post I went out and bought some equipment and recorded my first song. I'm really curious as to what you guys and girls think.

It's the only song uploaded at my myspace

Thanks

This song has the potential to be something very nice. I enjoyed the chord progression and the violin playing. I like the feel of the song in general

I'm not sure what your plans are but if you plan on keeping this as an instrumental I think it's lacking things. There's just not enough going on to capture interest without singing. If there were singing then I think the music could carry the tune.

I think the acoustic would sound a million times better mic'd. I always say that because I personally really don't like a plugged in acoustic guitar, sounds too cheap and unnatural.

I think the dirty electric detracts from the feel of the song with the acoustic and violin. I also noticed some timing issues with the electric. And towards the end it buries what sounds like a nice piano addition. I think the electric may sound better if it were further back in the mix and the timing was resolved. Or just not use it.

Again though, I did enjoy the feel of the tune. Some tweaking and maybe some lyrics and I think you've got your first one right. Just my opinion.

I appreciate that you took the time to listen to that and post what you did. Those were some things that I was kind of thinking in the back of my mind. I do have lyrics for the song but my singing isn't so good so I'm going to spare you on that.

And I bought a condensor mic yesterday so I'm going to try micing the acoustic with that and see what happens.

Thanks again.

The new condensor mic should make the acoustic guitar sound fuller. Maybe for this mix you could re-eq and add some body (lower range) to the guitar to make it "fatter". How is the violin recorded? It too could use a bit of bottom end.The violin playing is nice - love your vibrato. The distroted rhythms of the electric guitar are bumping up against the violin in the center of the spectrum. Maybe try panning the two out a bit to give them some room to be listened to individually. The lead guitar at the end is very nice - and it works well with the viloin tones but maybe a touch hot - if the two are supposed to be playing off each other... Nice rhythm to this song. Very danceable. Nice melody lines - again the violin playing is good. Good harmony leads between the guitar and violin before the electric rhythms. Good piano parts towards the end there. Lots going on to keep the listener interested too. ll this just my .02 . Pretty nice job and stands up well without vocals......

Hi,
There are some really nice ideas in this song. Unfortunately it sounds like a quick sketch at present. All of the instruments sound thin & reedy most particularly the acoustic guitar.
The violin lines are really good but poorly served by the brittle sound.
The distorted electric, to my mind, should be a distant rhythm or base for the other instruments to play on top of.
I don't miss a vocal but you do need a focal point - perhaps the acoustic guitar & violin could play a couple of phrases in concert to emphasis a "chorus" or the violin/piano or violin/dist guitar.
Keep working at it. You have a good ideas platform to build on.
Cheers

the acoustic guitar doesn't have enough bottom end. is that DI'd? try mic'ing it with your new condenser. it just sounds quite thin.

i think the distorted guitar sounds "too" distorted. the first solo/lead part that it does sounds really quite nice. i think the last lead part needs backing up - it really needs the acoustic behind there supporting it. also there are some timing issues which need to be dealt with, or omitted.

i think the violin doesn't have enough space - it seems rather squashed by the mix. you need to beef it up more.

i really like the song. i think some low level sampled drums could be fun in there, but this is a very good building block to make something great with.
