First mix of a smooth jazz groove

I liked the lead line a lot better - I need to take this one home to hear it on a real stereo. I get the feeling I'm missing a lot of the quiet guitar work on these shitty computer speakers.

Great stuff guy - inspirational.

Thanks Phyl

Thanks for the listen phyl, I think the mix is a lot better. After some more listens though, I hear some stuff I need to do further. I'll keep working on it.

yo 6 ropes...

Yeah... TWC would dig this :D Very good, in the genre. Probably avoided this... since most "smooth jazz" I've heard (esp. on mp3.com) just has that one depth, cheapo synth feel to it... like the eurythmics without voice or drums... (yuk)... This has a quiet confidence, and it works. There's some 70's Motown flavor in it, and it's cool...

I'm sure you noticed the clipping throughout... imhop this would improve a bit with a more expensive 'verb... the mix sounds a bit heavy between 600Hz & 1200Hz when the lead comes in... because that's the space it occupies... rather than turn it down, a little bit of space could be created for it by setting a parametric EQ (on the bass & snare) at about 900, widening it to about a Q of 3.5, and taking it down about 1.5 db each... tweak that to taste, & maybe see how that sounds on pno too. The piano could use some more highs, as well...

Other than that, some small overlaps at 250 Hz happen between the leads, bass, and snare at times... but those are few & far between (very nitpicky)...

Good musicianship. Very tight. BTW thanks for listening to my loud, unmixed tune (but no comment? ;)) Laters.

Thanks for the listen

Parti....Thanks for taking the time to listen, it seems that I kinda cut my own throat when I put the words Smooth Jazz in the thread title. Not getting alot of comments. I am sure people are avoiding this thinking its cheesy synth crap or something. Oh well, I will do a rocker next go around. Seems to be what gets the attention.

WOW

Great song, I really thig this style, very smooooth AND GORGEOUS TONE. I dug the tone very much.

What kind of amp/guitar did you use?

Hey flapo, thanks for the words. Its a strat through a POD into my system. My main guitar amp Is a mesa Boogie Mark3 but I have not tried to mic and record with it yet. Most of my recording is at night and I have two children who go to bed at about 9:00, so the POD is a great thing for me.

Brian

Through a POD??

Very impressive!

I guess it wasn't a preset sound, was it?

No, the presets are worthless. It took me weeks of playing with it to figure out how to work it. Once you figure it out you can get some great sounds out of it. I just think most people are impatient with it. they check it out at the store, it sounds like crap and then decide they dont like it. I have been able to get some killer vintage marshall tones out of it. I can also make it sound so close to my boogie that it blows me away. You really have to know what sound your going for and then work it to get it there. If you just sit down and start twistin knobs, your gonna be unhappy. One more thing, the sound is totally different if your mono or stereo. I think the stereo is neccesary in order for it to truly do its thing. I will shut up now.

Not sure which song you are promoting here (there were two) but I listened to Hot Saucier ...

If your asking for mix advice, it sounded real good over here. Maybe the drums can come up just a tad when the guitars come to the fore...that might be my only advice.

Nice playing for sure. Sounds like it could use some vocals (if you want to make it into something more) ...

Very nice :)

Super Great Groove

This is what Id like to put together. If I can get the overall sound quality you did Id be very pleased.
NOW, You say you tweaked your pod. Ive got an AX2 which should take very similar settings . I can even load pod patches and tweak them. The Guitar Tone is absolutely perfect. How did you do it exactly please. patch specifics appreciated

Cool groove!
I thought the mix sounded fine, very big and in your face.

Great guitar playing.
Wow,that sound out of a POD,fantastic!
Is it the small one,or the pro?

You said it took you a while to get a good sound.
Was it a matter of getting the right amp/emulation combination,or was it more in depth than that?
Hope you don't mind my asking,I have a J station and was thinking of getting a Pod eventually.

The rythym section was really good, great sounds out of thr DR5.

Really enjoyed it,thanks.

Pete

Hell, I almost dont know what to say. I don`t often get to hear anybody play in my favorite genre. It was like standing in the hall and smelling something good mammas cooking in the kitchen.. I love the guitar tones. Sounds like you been dipped in pool of the FLoyd and annointed with a touch of Larry C. Sounds like you got a pretty dang good handle on the software too.. IF you lived nearby I`d be aggrevating you to jam, a lot....

wfaraoni - I wish I could tell you a patch or something, but the truth is i just tweak the knobs in manual mode until I get what I am going for. Heres what I remember. In manual mode use Modern Class A, I have found this to be the best amp model to use for Smoother Jazz type tones. Drive at about 4, Bass on 1, Mids on 5, treble on 5, Channel volume on 10, reverb on 2.

I have also found that if you run the effects in bypass it really seems to bring the richness of the tone down. I usually will run it on with a minute amount of delay or chorus just to keep that stereo spread happening.

Also Someone else on this board said that POD sounds are setup to sound full and great by itself and when you go to add it in with other instrumentation it hogs to much frequency. I have found this to be true also, it seems to be extremely Bass heavy. You can even drop the bass knob to zero and it still has enough bass.

Just a note also, this was recorded with a Strat. So it is pretty chimey with alot of pop. Next go around I will use my 335 and see how much warmer I can get it. Oh and its the Small POD 2.0. There is some noise in the track that comes from the drums, they were a sample I used and looped. Not a very clean sample though.

Muzeman - Like I was saying, I think the POD is a great thing but it takes time to get it where you want it. Its so easy to add a little to much of something and ruin the sound. I think the reason why poeple are always frustrated with the POD is because they lead you to believe you can just plug in, turn it on and BOOM, you get this great sound your happy with. But it doesnt work that way. Guitar players have this sound in their head and we try to match that with whatever amp we are playing, be it the POD or a real amp. One sound may sound great to the 18 year old who is into PANTERA or something, you flip to that patch and think its the worst thing you ever heard. When I tried the J station out in the store it seemed to be oriented towards heavy metal to me, but I am sure if I had it for awhile and tweaked on it I could get it to sound like I wanted it. Do you have anything posted using the J station? I would like to hear it.

Toki987 - Thanks for the words, I am glad you liked it. Started out as a practice session and kinda turned into a song, not a very complicated one, but poeple seem to like it. I guess I need to write more smooth groove stuff. I thinks this genre gets a bad rap alot of the time. Alot of people try to take it to far, to complex. A simple groove with some tasty yet simple stuff can work pretty well. Simple can be good, just look at most POP music. May not be the most inspiring for musicians but it sells, because people like it. Jamming would be cool, No one ever wants to play stuff like this, I guess its not Hip enough. Well I need to stop writing a book here. Thanks for taking the time to listen and respond. Very much appreciated

Hi Brian,

I have a rough mix up of a song I'm working on with boydrj.

http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=1317&alid=-1

It's the first song.

The electric is the Jstation,I doubled the parts and sent them through a BBE,only way I could get it to sound halfway decent!

Don't mind the vocals,there a scratch track,literally!.
I'll be doubling them and adding harmomy later, cause they need it!:D

Thanks for asking,
Pete

Very nice guitar work and I like your tone...it captures the Strat sound qite well.......a nice groove....I'd like the drums up just a bit....damn, very nice guitar playing! Thumbs up!

Thanks Lt. Bob

Thanks for the kind words. Next time I feel inspired to try that style I will go with my 335 instead.

Thanks for taking the time to listen.

Sorry this thread keeps resurfacing.
