First Guitar & Amp - Advice Needed

Hi again. I'm looking at getting a guitar/amp to MUCK AROUND WITH. I'm thinking about getting a Squire Affinity Telecaster and maybe a Frontman 15R amp. I've been strumming an old accoustic for under a year, and am just looking for something new, nothing serious. Is this sort of combination any good?
 
I would get a $100.00 Strat copy, with hum buckers on bridge, and neck, helps keep down the noise, very important if you decide to record.

Instead of an amp, I would get a pod. You can plug it into a stereo, boom box, powered speakers and have great sound.

Unless you are going to play with a band, or fry your ears, I think an amp is a waist of money.
 
YOU NEED AN AMP!!!!! Everyone seems to be on a rant about PODs. They may be ok for recording and effects and all of that kind of stuff.......but for a first electric guitar you need to get an amp.[FOR ALL YOU GUYS THAT LOVE POD, HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN ABOUT THE MAGIC THAT COMES FROM JUST PLUGGING IN TO AN AMP; NO EFFECTS AND JUST CRANKING IT UP TO 10?] I don't know what type of music you are interested in playing, but I recomend a small tube amp for your first time. Especialy if you are considering a Tele. There is something wonderfull about single coil pickups and amp tube. Depending on you budget, an old silver face Fender Princeton Reverb or a Fender Champ are great starters. Or if you are looking for something newer, check out Fender's tweed Champ reisue or a Blues Jr. Plug in ,crank it to 10 and have fun..... I think you'll be dissappionted with an effects box only. You need to experience the magic of playing your first "E" cord through a small amp cranked as loud as it will go. Worry about effects and recording latter.

Don't get me wrong. I have an old fender bassman, that I love.

I just think the pod gives a lot of bang for the buck.
 
I agree with Daddy-O that a Blues Jr. would make a nice choice for a starter amp. The POD is very awesome but you may find it difficult to use for your first gigging/practicing situation with a band.

Also, I've noticed J. Turser guitars seem to be nice starter instruments. At least the Strat copy. Good tuners and useful pickups and wiring. Under $200US.

All good suggestions here, but I would wait on the POD until later. Go with a simple setup; guitar, small amp, maybe 10 - 20 watts to get your feet wet. I think Daddy-O's got a good point; nothing like feeling that first bad news chord through your toes as well as your ears.

Don't hesitate - jump right in! The water's fine.
