Not sure if this is the best place to put this thread, but I figure a lot of what happens in live sound, happens in tracking/mixing as well, as far as signal path (obvious exceptions including the speakers/monitors themselves and separate mixes, etc.).

Long story short, I've got a live sound/FOH gig tomorrow night, and I'm not 100% sure of what I'm walking into. I know they've got mostly cheap equipment (Behringer 32-Track Eurowhatever, Two Behringer 4-channel gate/compressors, one presumably non-cheap DBX DriveRack PA+) but it's all new. I know this is an open-ended/vague question, but as far as signal routing goes, does anyone have any idea how they might have it set up? I feel like an idiot asking such a question, as there are literally thousands of ways to hook this stuff up, but I don't really have any more detailed info. Even incredibly general advice about live sound routing would be helpful.

Perhaps I have it right in my head already, but here's what I'd imagine I'll run into:

Mic -> board pre -> board eq -> board fader -> master LR -> DriveRack PA+ -> mains

As far as inserts, I believe they're pre-fader/eq, right? If so, the aux send is unrelated to the inserts, right?

Also, as far as aux sends/returns, these essentially split the signal down another path either pre- or post-fader if I recall correctly, but the aux returns I'm completely mystified by. Do these rout to the main LR, if used with reverb & such? And if not, they just go out to the stage monitors, right?

Sorry for the stupid post guys, I feel like a n00b jackass..

How big is the band?

What is the monitor situation?

Multiple bands, generally 2 guitars, bass, drums, vocals (maybe keys, likely not).

This is the equipment info I got from the band:

Behringer Eurodesk sx3242fx

dbx DriveRack PA +

multicom pro-xl

pv2600 power amp

2 x plx3602 power amps

Rule #1 for me is the amps are the last thing on and the first thing off...

Gates/comp use as inserts on each channel.....I usually only use gates on toms and kick..

compressor wherever needed usuallly vox for me--as insert on channel or subgroup-

I always route the output of a verb or delay back into a seperate channel on the console while setting the mix knob to fully wet on the unit itself...gives you more control to help fit the FX into the mix
