Hey man... this is a really good recording for your first try... I wish my first was anywhere near this good... :p

The vocals were a little hot in some places, (like the harmony at 1:59). And you might wanna back the echo/harmony off a little (like at 2:11 and 2:27, etc.) cause it comes out a little too much and gets a bit overpowering. But overall it's a pretty well-rounded mix.

You got a good voice too... (that always helps) :D and I liked the "michael jackson-esque" falsetos (like the one at 2:52, etc.) :cool:

Hey...Fun tune! I really like the bass line. The vocals are a bit loud, but great harmonies! The git sounds nice and sharp.

The song is catchy and everything ties together nicely.

Hey good tune man.I like your voice.I realize you have the lead vocal doubled but it sounds pretty good.I think this song would sound a lot better with more instrumentation and percussive things like shakers or tamboruines.Something just to get it going percussively.A semi distorted guitar on the choruses would punch things up.

I've got to confess it's not the first song I've recorded, just the first song I've been brave enough to post. I've been dabbling in recording for about 3 years in my spare time - it's a very slow process. I completed a whole 11 track album a couple of years ago but I've moved on a lot since then.

Kramer: Thanks for the advice. I agree totally with your suggestions (it's so nice to get feedback from people who understand what your doing rather than family and non musical friends). My little percussive taps on the glass and the drum aren't quite enough I know. But I did turn the kitchen over looking for that glass with a nice ring ! I've been meaning to get a tamborine - maybe the time has come. Since this recording I've convinced a friend who plays electric guitar to get involved. I'll post another song tomorrow with his playing featured.

Unfortunately I've listened through the song so many times now I don' think I can inflict it on my wife anymore ! So I'd better leave it for now.

If anyone's interested in the gear I used just ask...

Get some headphones.........Sennheiser 580's with a Headroom amp, sounds pretty much like speakers.

Really good song and good recording. I especially liked the interplay of the voices the latter part of the song. Guitars and vox sounded good. The voice was a little loud on my system but not overwhelmingly so. I enjoyed this! ;)
 
Looks like I'm gonna have to turn those vocals down a tad.

Lt. Bob: I've got some Sennheiser 270's - but I've heard the 580's are an audiophile standard.

As far as sheer levels go I've read that listening in mono through one speaker gives the best indication of relative loudness. I might give it a go and see if I can't correct the levels.

Great tune. I can really groove to it. I almost picked up my guitar and jammed along with it.

The only problem I have is with the vocals. Not so much the quality of them but they feel so seperate from the intrumental portion of the song.

It sounds almost like the band was recorded one day and the vocals were recorded on another and the mixing just didn't blend the two together. Almost like they were too out front.

That is one hell of a recording though for your first try. Keep it up, and listen to the others here. Your onto something really good, a little tweaking and you'll be good to go.
 
Thanks Evildick (that's the same nickname one of my old science teachers use to have - his surname was simcock !) I've got quite a few comments about the vocals.. funny I never really noticed before. That's why independant feedback is important I guess.

I'm not really sure how to make my vocals meld with the "band" better. At the speed I record it is likely that the vocals were recorded on a diiferent month to the other stuff ! I suspect when I lower the vocal level it will automaticly sound more unified. I think I try too hard to make the vocals intelligible... which is important to me but may be the source of my trouble.
 
Good song. Nice tune, with nice harmonies.

The vocals we pretty high in the mix. I think the backing vocals we also too high in relation to the lead vocals. There also seemd to be a couple of places where the parts didn't seem to mesh.

It also seemd that the lead was on one side and the backing on the other. Makes headphone listening a little more distracting. You might want to send the lead down the center.

But I tell ya, it was still a pretty good song.
 
Yep I now see what everyone's talking about. I hadn't listened to the song for a while till last night and most of the comments have been pritty spot on. I didn't get round to remixing it last night... but I'll have another crack on the weekend. Yes the vocals were off centre.... not sure what I was thinking but I know it was deliberate... but I'm going to try it centre. I'll repost when I've had another go.

Pretty cool, very clean. I'd agree with most of the comments. Great vocals. Kinda reminds me of George Michael's later stuff. Take that for what it's worth ;)

muzeman: I've been waiting for this question...

I wrote all my songs on acoustic guitar so first I laid down a guitar and vocal track (without a click - I find it kills my groove). Vocal recorded on an NT1 into a Focusrite Voicemaster then using a Lexicon MPX-500 as an A/D into an Event Gina soundcard (SPDIF) and finally into Cubase (R3.7r2) too much detail ? Simultaneously my Taylor 310 guitar with B-Band AST Pickup into Joemeek VC6Q and MPX-500 etc.

From there I overdubbed drums (Roland TD-8 electric kit) laid down bass (Spector 2002) followed by extra vocals, percussion (glass and hand drum). Lastly I took my DAT to the local supermarket and recorded some traffic that finished it off.

I use Cubase to play back tracks and do rough edits but all the mixing is done externally on an old Yamaha ProMix 01 cause I think it sounds better than Cubase ! And I find the automation much easier.

Lastly to add some sparkle I mix in a second copy of the master stereo track with a second copy run through this free VST plugin that spreads the stereo image.

Everything is 16bit, I can't justify the expense of going 24/96 yet and I feel there's a lot of other things to fix first.

Hehe I was just about to ask how you got such a great drum sound and what mics you used. Guess the electronic set explains it :)
