That lo-freq rumbling could be a microphonic tube. You'll know for sure once you replace 'em. I'd recommend using Mesa tubes. I've run both Mesa's & Groove Tubes in mine, and prefer the Mesa's. Boogies are really sensitive to preamp tube quality due to the extreme gain.
My bass knob usually stays at 3 with the knob pulled out. Any more than that makes the preamp too loose. You can always add more bottom with the graphic.
