Hey, fellas. We've finally given in to the 'nu-metal' dark side and put together a tune in B (B flat actually). Since it's a different guitar than I'm used to using, plus a lower tuning, I'm not sure about the guitars and bass (in terms of clarity, if they're in the right place in the mix, etc.). Also, I'm trying to keep the overall 'sound' consistent with our other stuff, depsite the lower tuning... Please take a listen and let me know what you think. The tune is "Scarecrow" and you can find it at http://www.mp3.com/30SoS. Danke!

Well I will qualify this by saying that I can't get into this genre at all. That being said, the guitar riff in the verse is GREAT! Really, I mean that, brilliant. The rest of it I can't stand but thats my problem. This stuff is obviously popular for some reason. To me it sounds like everyone is pissed off all out of proportion to what they are singing about.

Guitars sound great to me.. I'd like the drums a bit more upfront tho, with more bite/snap from the snare.

Very good as per usual!

lemme get this straight. adding another 4th below your e string wasn't low enough so you dropped it a half step more? fuck it, go all the way and just buy and eight string LOL.

i like the song. i like everything about it. i love detuned music. can't help it.

oh, nice scream at the end! is that natural sustain or manufactured? either way it's nice.

can't give mix comments, listening on crap headphones. thanks for stopping by.

Thanks for the input guys...

ashulman -- We appreciate you posting even though this style isn't your thing. Really glad you like the verse riff -- it's more ambient than musical, but we felt like it fit the mood of the tune better than more heavy riffing... Fair enough about the rest of the tune -- you're right in the sense that we're not as pissed in our everyday life as the song would imply... ;)

meshuggah -- thanks, man. We may have squashed the drums a bit on this one in an effort to get the guitars super-big. The lower tuning made it harder to get them to sit where we're used to having them in the mix...

erichenryus -- funny you say that about tuning low... We've got friends that tune their 7-strings to A flat -- plus they have a hipshot that drops them down another full step! I'm amazed at how he gets any definition to his guitars... We actually tune a half-step low on everything so B flat was natural to us (no pun intended). Glad you dig the tune and yes, the scream at the end is natural (though it nearly gave me an aneurysm doing it)

Any other thoughts or suggestions out there...?

I think you guys do a great job in this genre! I kept wanting more "thump" out of the kick (the snare sounds fine on my set up...) and a thicker breathier sound on the lead vox during the verse (...for even more contrast to the chorus?) Good stuff as usual!!

at first i thought that bass intro wasn't o perpose.

i dig it though - nice recording. Drums sound really really fake (are they?)...Vdrums or drum machine? I hate that sound...ha.

But, seems like a pretty clean mix for the most part.

well i prefer this kind of music to the bluesier stuff posted around here.... I'm not real big into screaming, but from a recording perspective the song was great. The drums sound a lot better than my fake drums, but they could definitely sound better. (and believe it or not, yes I can tell the difference!). For this style of music, I think POD has a really big powerful bass/snare drum sound... i think if you got a the bass and snare sounding like that the recording would just BLOW UP. it would rock even more...

Thanks, MAC2. We've thickened up the kick drum a bit from previous recordings, but we're still short of how we'd like it to sound. Also, I think the fact that the drums are a little lower than we used to mix them factors in... And I just got a C1 and am still learning it, but if you have any tips on getting that tone on a vocal take that builds to a scream, I'd owe you big time... ;)

shackrock -- thanks for listening and posting. luckily, the intro bass tone is intentional :). And yes, the drums are fake (an old BOSS 660, actually). We've tweaked them about as much as we can, but its still an ongoing process...

dctalkdotnet -- thanks for your comments. i'd be surprised if anyone out here couldn't tell we're using a drum machine, but we have been lucky enough to fool some less savvy listeners. Yeah, the production on the newer P.O.D. stuff is nice (Howard Benson, I think). My ideal kit sound would be closer to Terry Date's work on Deftones "Around the Fur" disc, but I think that's out of our reach (especially with our drum machine).

Any other suggestions on how to beef up the vox or on the mix in general? Any experts on the BOSS 660 (and building drum sounds) would be more than welcome as well... :D
