first attempt. advice please.

Dear all,

I'm new to multi-track recording, and just after advice with this recording in terms of mix / balance.

- The drums were done via MIDI using vdrums / superior drummer
- Vocals cheap vocal mic in my living room
- Bass direct-line into mixer.
- Guitar 1 mic-up Marshal 80/80
- Guitar 2 - direct line with GuitaRig2

Any tips / opinions on how things sit 'in the mix' are appreciated. Obviously I'm limited by my equipment / technology, but I'm sure there's things I can do in Reaper to improve.

I love it! Right off it reminded me of the Cure. The song is awesome too! Hard to comment on something so good but I would bring up the bass more and and end the song better... One of the guitars end abruptly. As for drums, some of the fills are off. For the solo towards end, have you considered adding delay on that? I'm a fan for sure. Great job!
 
Sounds good to me. I'd bring the vocals down in the verse just a tiny bit, and maybe put up the snare a tiny bit. I'm a fan of songs in which you can tell the singer is English. Usually it's hard to tell because the accent kind of disappears when they start singing :D

Man, I don't really have anything to add as far as criticism goes, but I just had to say I loved the song. Great job!
 
I agree, it sounds really good. The big thing to me is that everything seems to fit together. It reminds me of listening to REM's Document on my monitors: some of the brilliance of the album isn't there (as it shouldn't be), but everything has a place and it sounds like a song, not just different instruments. It helps that the song itself is well structured and catchy.

If this is really your first time, you should consider a career in recording, because your instincts are dead on.

The overall mix is good, but I think you could add some shimmer to the cymbals, and bring the snare a little more forward in the mix; during busier sections it's somewhat difficult to hear. I like the arrangement, I like how it rises in intensity at the choruses

I'm just going with my ears, I haven't actually even mixed anything yet. Still waiting for my Mac to come in the mail so I can start actually doing stuff. It's a really good job for a first attempt though!

I'd also like to mention I'm listening on headphones, if that changes anything
 
Well done - little things here and there (comments above) but mainly a great song which is mixed fairly well for a first try.
 
Sounds fantastic. I really like your voice! The background vocals sound very good too.

After the pause at 0:41, does the music come back out of time? I should divulge that I have a preference for not breaking the flow of a song, but that pause seems extra long. Or maybe it needs a snare crack or something to make it sound less like a mistake.
 
Also, give the music longer to decay at the very end. Seems like an abrupt ending, unless it leads directly into the next track on your album.
