first acoustic panel complete!!!!!!, with photos

Here is my first panel. I used roxul safe and sound batt insulation. I was going to use the 2'X4' batts but neither home depot,lowes, or menards had it. In fact home depot was the only one to have roxul in stock at all. I was told by all three places that they would have to have a minimum order of twelve bundles to get the 2'X4' stuff. So I settled with the 16"by48"(approx), 3" batts. I will just have to build more panels to get the square footage covered. Works out ok because I like the way the more narrow panels look on the wall. I used a fabric that is similar to thin sweatpants. between the panel itself and the wall will be an approximately 2" gap. All in all I am satisfied with the way this project went. I have never upholstered anything before so I think I did ok with it. One down, eleven more to go for now.

Looks great man -you could probably get away with using a lot less wood in those corners, I don't think you even need 45 degree angles, just stick a 1x3 running across like the lower braces, should save a lot of time when making 10 panels... they aren't structural so they don't have to be reinforced much. you can also use cheaper material on the back inside if you want to save some money.

Looks top notch though - very well done. - You might want to consider making some 30" x 48" panel's using two rows of roxul - might also save some time and materials :)
 
Thanx for the advice, after getting two up on the wall it seems that it may be easier to configure the room for wall coverage if I have both the 15"X48" and the 30"X48". I don't mind the work, the thing I'm wondering about is if my 45 degree angle braces will somehow affect the dampening of the panel? even though it is in the back, it is another reflective surface, any thoughts?
 
The corner braces do not need to be as wide as what you have. It looks from the photos, that you've used substantially thick wood for your frames.

Okay you used 2x4's. Which, in my most humble of opinions, is overkill and adds a lot of weight.

I know 2x4's are cheap. Which is why lots of stuff is built using it. But if you want to lighten the load, I'd recommend 1x4's and 1x3's for for your framework, and 1x2 cross braces. Remember, there's no load on these frames, other than lightweight insulation and fabric. They don't need to handle 200 pounds on top of them, just keeping the insulation tucked carefully inside.

So for your next pieces, try some lighter wood, and you should still get good results. The wood isn't helping your sound, the insulation is. And everything here is very light. In fact, your panels should be light enough to hold up with two fingers, and still be rigid enough to hold its shape.

So try some 1x4 boards for your sides, and 1x3 boards for your back braces. Considering this will be thinner wood and you don't want to split them, make pilot holes for all your screws.

Think of this construction as a simple picture frame. Doesn't need to be hefty, just hold its shape. The insulation will stay put even in a slightly flexible framework.

EDIT

And yes, you can use 1x3's or even 1x2's for your corner braces and still have enough room to get one or two screws to bite into them, with a smaller profile back there. The corner braces aren't detrimental, but give you anchoring points to hook onto your screws in the walls or steel cables or eye hooks or whatever you use.

yeah - I used all 1x2's and a nailgun - got them together in no time - on a few I used 1x3's or 1x4's for the short pieces to space them off the wall.

 
neat design. how do you cover the side facing up in the photo?
 
sweet! I am already re-thinking how I can do my next ten panels. I think I will try using 1"X2"s. Should save a little money as well as have more roxul soaking up sound.I'll report back with more photos.
