i'm putting a computer together and looking at a couple different firewire options. i'm planning on getting a firepod or the new motu 8pre, and can't find what firewire speed they run at, and I don't know if that's even relevent. As I understand it, my firewire port should probably be 1394a (400mb/s), but I can't find if the firepod or 8pre run at that speed. any knowledge?

Yes they are firewire400 and no, it doesn't matter.

(as far as I know there are only a couple of units that are firewire800; but 400 is perfectly capable of handling anything you can throw at it.)

Note the most important thing is that Motu requires you to use a firewire card with either TexasInstruments or Lucent firewire chips. Be aware of that. When I bought my 828mkII I made sure my new laptop had TI firewire chipset and it works perfectly.) Dont cheap out on the firewire card... makes no sense to run thousands of $$$ worth of software through a $600 interface and then try to run it on a $9 firewire card!!!

400 mb/s is just the maximum runnign rate or a firewire port
me and my dad figured out how many mb/s it takes for one track at 24 bit 96khz i dont quite remember, but its not much. this is why firewire is golden
