Hi all, me again !!

I was going to go for something like this :

- FMR RNC/RNP combo
- LynxOne soundcard A/D converter

For my band's recording needs, as what I heard is that these would give me a good sound for the price.

Now the issue is that after discussion with my band, we might purchase a laptop to record on the go sometimes, so we'd need a transportable solution, and if understood right the LynxOne and laptop are no match. So I searched here and found out my best bet would be a Firewire interface, if I understood the concept right, it's a preamp/converter that works outside your PC... Do you still need a specefic soundcard with that, how do you hook it up to a PC or laptop ?

Now I don't want to go down on quality, and the items mentionned above would have cost me arount 1000 $ I guess. So what firewire interface would suit me best ? I only need two inputs, the only time we might have to record more than a track or two in stereo is recording the whole band, but then we'd simply use our mixer's outs.

Is there a firewire solution which involves only the converter and soundcard so I can still go with the FMR gear, or something similar ?

Also, if i havn't got the concept of the firewire interface, please explain it to me.

Thanks.
Francis.

Why not look at the Mackie Onyx 1220 and the Firewire card for the Mackie. It is awesome sound, super clean! With the Firewire and you would have to have a Firewire card on your laptop. You should be able to do that solution for about $1000.00 maybe less! The 1220 would give you 12 channels.

If you're recording the whole band, wouldn't you want each instrument on its own track?

Check out the Presonus firepod, 8 channel firewire interface for $600

Ok maybe I didn't explain myself right, I already have a mixer, I don't plan on recording the whole band for important puposes so all on one track would be good enough, what I really need is two inputs.

It's called a Firewire interface because it connects to the computer through the Firewire port. Be sure whatever computer you decide on actually has a Firewire port.

Here's a link to a product made by the same company as the Firepod called the Firebox. From your description of your needs it fills the bill and more, and gets good chatter around here...

How does this compare to the FMR preamp and the Lynx A/D converter ?

Any other solution ? What do I need to have a firewire port on my computer, a special soundcard ? Maybe I should still go with LyneOne + FMR and forget about the laptop option for now, I don't want to compromise sound quality too much !

Any advice and suggestion is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Francis.

USB is also an option. It's more liekly the computer you're using will have a USB input than a firewire at the moment. If you only need 2 channels you don't need to spend 1,000. Take a look at this little Tascam. It's very portable as well. It costs $199.
