hey everyone.
i plan on buying a presonus firepod to start recording with.

i was wondering what kind of different setups everyone uses with a firepod so i can get some ideas on what else to buy.

i plan on recording drums, guitar, bass, vocals, and maybe some keys.

monitors, headphone distribution + headphones, some good mics depending on your budget...

A handful of mics of your choosing to the firepod to a monster PC with a decent recording program to monitors. When tracking, 4 channel headphone amp to a bunch of isolated (closed back) headphones. Thats the only stuff I use, besides acoustic re-inforcement (sound panels).

Can record all that you mentioned at the same time, separately, full band and whatever. Hope that helps.

As for the pc.

Would 512 mb of ram be enough or should i upgrade and get another 1 gb?

Definitely upgrade. I have 2g and mine runs flawlessly, but 1g works great too. Bus speed can also contribute, but I'm not exactly sure whats out right now, but the higher the number the better! (as long as its compatible) Besides that, there isn't anything you can really upgrade to get a big improvement unless you know how to gut a computer.

Thanks for all of your help.

as far as the Cubase LE that comes with the firebpod goes, Is it any good or should i look into a different software?

I would suggest a drum mic kit. There are a couple of kits from Audix that are pretty good fro the price... and there you hace mics for drums and some of them can be used for guitar amps.

The you could start with a condenser (MXL or Rode) for vocals and acoustic instruments...

Get a good computer (processor, memory...hard drive)

instead of getting a drum mic kit could i get a couple shure sm57s, 2 overheads, and a couple others?

or would the drum mic kits just be better?

It's very nice indeed. It will give you a fair introduction to Cubase and if you want to upgrade to Cubase SX (much more powerful and flexible), you can save $100 on the upgrade package versus the regular package.

Definitely check out the LE that comes with the Firepod. You'll probably like it and you can't beat the price.

Jeff

BTW, my setup is very much like Anomaly Design's, with the addition of a DBX 166XL.

Jeff

i know im probably a pain in the ass with alot of questions but im just kind of new to the whole recording thing besides just using a mixer and a few mics, but how would i use a compressor like the DBX 166XL with the firepod?

does it just compress 1 channel or all of them?

thanks alot for all of your help!

The Firepod comes with instructions you should've read.... but, for summarizing, you haveeffects loops on channel 1 and 2, so jut plug the compressor there and you will have two compressed channels. It will not have effects whatsoever on the rest of the channels.

would've read the instructions, but the firepod hasnt been delivered yet.

:]
