Hello, I currently have a pc and have been considering purchasing a firepod. I had been recording on a Yamaha AW16g and then importing the tracks, but the pres on that are not very good so I want to step up to pc recording.

Specs of PC:
-AMD Athlon 64 3400+
-1 gig ram (and upgrading)
-Motherboard based sound (I don't know if soundcard matters for a firepod)

Now my question. If I were to purchase a Firepod, is that all I would need to record? Would I just plug in the Firepod with a firewire cable to a firewire input on the pc? I have Adobe Audition 1.5 from a while back so I would be set program wise. Can anyone tell me if I am missing anything in this?

Thanks,

Bryan

Yep, assuming you've already got mics & monitors, that's about all you need

Yeah, that's about it. Your computer's soundcard will not matter, since the Firepod is essentially a soundcard itself. I would recommend purchasing a seperate PCI slot firewire card with the Texas Instuments chip on it ($20-$30) to input to.

When using firewire connections...make sure you investigate things like conflicts and bugs due to SP2 and WinXP. I remember setting up my Firebox and had to iron out a few problems because of Delayed Write Failed errors and other such things where XP bawks at data transfer across firewire.

The problem my be sorted out now with updates or whatever.

Alright, thanks a lot for all your help guys!

Oh, and another quick question, what are opinions on the quality of the pres and other things on the firepod?

you don't really need to upgrade your current specs for the firepod. also, i would recommend a firewire hard as well

The Firepod pre's are pretty good. They won't be as good as a discrete preamp costing $1k, but are more than adequate for day to day recording.
The firepod comes bundled with Cuebase LE as recording software. I don't use it, but it is a good program. Currently, Presonus is offering five free plug ins with the purchase of a Firepod. Your computer will work just fine, especially if you add some more memory.

The pres on the Firepod are the same as the pres on the Firebox I think. I rate the pres on my Firebox...no worries

The only pres I have alot of experience with are Mackie VLZ and the ones in my firepod. I could definately notice an upgrade with the firepod pre's. They seem a bit clearer with more headroom.

Once again, thanks guys. I think im going to get one off of E-Bay for half price (you have to love E-Bay).

Come to think of it, another question. :)

Does the Firepod have phantom power because I plan on recording drums and the like with condensors.

Yep phantom power switchable in banks of 4, ie channels 1-4 on or off, 5-8 on or off

That's awesome. Thanks, I THINK that it my final question.

Are the firepods better than the motu ultralites? i know that
feature-wise, the motu is better. but what about the pres?

I can't compare sorry...but someone will probably
