Fireplace TV Mounting – Is It a Good Idea?

Hello everyone.

I’m considering mounting my TV above the fireplace, but I’m unsure whether it’s the best option. The fireplace produces quite a bit of heat, and I’m concerned about whether this could damage the TV over time.

I’m also wondering about viewing height, since the TV would be higher than eye level when sitting on the sofa.

For those who have mounted a TV above their fireplace, how has your experience been? Did you use a heat shield or a special mounting bracket?

Would you recommend it, or is there a better alternative for positioning the TV in a living room with a fireplace?

thanks in advance for any help

Not a good idea. Quite apart from the fact that even moderate excess heat shortens the life of any electronics (E caps mostly) there is the "shimmer" you will get viewing the picture through a curtain of rising hot air and that air will carry particles which the TV will suck in and deposit all over the 'tronics. In two years the internals of that telly will look 20 years old!

Since FSTVs came about I have had six"! Not only are they not very reliable but are simply no cost effective to repair so ANYTHING you can do to extend their lives is a good thing!

AND - looking upwards is really tiring for any longer viewing period/ The other thing, is the things get filthy!I had one above a log burner, and the TV looked dreadful.

I had to fix them Rob and one customer had his 26" Grundig in his chippy!
