Okay, it's just a jam I did last night but it's really a test to see what I could do. I've only had this thing a week or so. The playing is a little weak (by the time I did the solo guitar I was exhausted!) but it sounds pretty good for my first try...

It's too big to upload here at 3mb but I'll link it. Let me know what you think of my recording techniques so far...

Cool, Rudd. Sounds like you're having fun with it. Did you use all BR8 patches, or did you mic stuff up? Hard to tell here on my laptop speakers here at "work". Did you do everything in the BR8, or did you use any external editing, PC's, etc?

Pete

I'm having a great time with it. I used my DR-5 to program drums. I recorded my bass direct and dry. I used my Korg AX1000G for all guitar work recorded direct with BR-8 input effects bypassed. I then used the BR-8 loop effects during mixdown and recorded thru the audio inputs of my computer using Cakewalk Pyro. From there I converted to mp3.

Thought I'd go simple this first time out. Had a devil of a time on the solo guitar tone. It's interesting that I really had to play with the tones to get the right "recording" sound. The patches I used in the Korg AX1000G are quite different from the patches I have programmed for my "live" sound. I spent a long time adjusting parameters and dialing in the sounds I was going for. Still not 100% happy with it but I think I'm on the right track. What a difference it makes to have the ease of the BR-8.

Yeah, nice and easy isn't it? And so crystal clear. You'll have to excuse me, but I'm a Trashcam Portastudio guy for years, so I'm kind of in heaven with this thing. It's revived my desire to write songs!

The bass sounds good... I want to listen to it on better speakers when I get home. So you're going direct and dry, no processing or patches? That's encouraging. What kind of bass have you got? I want to get one, and have no clue when it comes to basses. I'm looking for something cheap for recording.

Pete

me too.. my trashcam finally bit the dust and booted me into the digital world :-)

Yeah, the bass was recorded completely without effect until final mix where I added a hint of reverb, that's about it.

I just bought this bass, from Starving Musician. It's a Dean Edge4. It's got active pickups and lot of interesting tones. I paid $350 for it. I've been playing a lot of basses checking them out recently and I was in the same boat. I didn't want to spend $1000, just something decent for recording.

Here's a pick of it. It's got a nice neck, good action and a variety of tones can be got out of these pickups...

Wow, that did sound great! I'm going to buy a real bass too.

Thanks, 72

and thanks for the help on deciding on the BR-8. I'm having a blast. The real bass has made a world of difference, I think. The DR-5 is great but being able to manipulate the bass separately, especially EQ-wise really pulls it away from the drums and gives it it's own home. You won't regret getting a bass, I'm sure.

My main reason forgetting the BR-8 was recording my songs for the rest of the band to hear, that's why I never thought about getting a bass but the BR-8 has made me want to make my demos better sounding. In fact, my demos sound better than the band playing them. You know that you can MIDI sync the DR-5 and the BR-8s Rhythm Guide. If I want to do a quick recording and don't want to program the DR-5, I'll pick a tempo on the BR-8 and later sync the DR-5 using ch 10.

Yea, I haven't tried the MIDI function yet. What I really want to do is to use the BR-8 to set the tempo and trigger the DR-5. That way I can edit the drums later. I'm finding that I want to adjust volumes and tones of individual drums and cymbals after I complete my recordings and I ccan't do that right now because I've just dumped the DR-5 down to tracks 1 and 2. I'd like to be able to use if for reference first, and then fine tune it before I commit it to "tape"......

Yes, that's you can have the BR-8 control the tempo and trigger the DR-5, I thought I had made that clear with my last post.

That is what I did last night, recorded the guitar(s) tracks using the BR-8 Rhythm Guide (Blues2 - 90bpm) and later MIDI connected to DR-5 and recorded the drum, with the BR-8 triggering the kit I used. The drum MIDI ch in the DR-5 is ch10 and you have to set the BR-8 MIDI send to ch10,

perfect, that is what I was talking about. Yes, thank you. I have yet to try it but I'll do that next....

The thing I wasnt' sure about was I didn't want my DR-5 just to play the patterns found in the BR-8. I wanted to make sure that I was only using the BR-8 to trigger the tempo and start point of the DR-5. I want the DR-5 to play the patterns I program in it.

thanks!

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by 'program the tracks'? You can make a 'tempo map' with the BR-8, but I know that you can select a 'kit' that the BR-8 will trigger on the DR-5. I have yet learned to program the DR-5! I'll punch in/out drum changes but have never program the DR-5.

well, I program my DR-5 with the beat I want. I write a drum part specifically for my song. All I want the BR-8 to do is start the DR-5 playing. I don't want it to just play what the BR-8 "tells" it to play, in other words, I don't want the BR-8 patterns. I just want it to start my DR-5 so I can run the outputs of the DR-5 into the BR-8 and it will record my DR-5 patterns. So, all I need the BR-8 to do is send a MIDI signal to the DR-5 and tell it when to start.

Do you think this is possible???

The answer to your question, is "I don't know." Check the manual.

looking more like a drum machine is a must !

Great sounds being made. The bass being added can never be a bad thing. I bought some junk Samic crap, $20 bucks and a new set of stings. The COSM bass patches (somewhere between 45 and 50?) is capable of breathing new life into any bass line. And with a little adjustment you can get just about any tone you may want. POD would also be interesting to look at as well as the drum unit.
