I've been playing guitar for six years now and if I play too much in one/two days I still destroy my fingers. Isn't there supposed to be a point where that doesn't happen anymore?

Or am I just a freak? :D

Just wait until you hit 40 or 50 and the Arthritis kicks in!

How much do you play? If I drop bass for a while, and pick it back up, my right hand fingers are meat, and when I went all SRV and worked up to 13's, I had some blistering, but I never have fingertip trouble otherwise.

strings

How often you change your strings might have something to do with it. Usually if I change my strings out monthly my callouses get strong enough to just slide over the guitar strings with no extra damage. Old strings can tear up fingers real quick.

Ha, doesn't sound like you guys have that problem.

I usually play at least a few times a week, usually at least one day for a long period of time. Otherwise I won't feed my guitar addiction.

I don't change the strings very often though, maybe I'll try doing that ;)

I play every day, and I play on different instruments using different gauges [nylon, steel and bass strings] and it seems that my fingers do not get used to any of them.

Okay the skin does not come of, but if I go without three days, it seems that some of the caluses have shrinked.

When you play a lot, seems that you have to keep up with it for your calluses to remain at their same density and thickness.

I know some of the well-know players use 010's when they go on tour, and as the tour progresses [and their callusses have become harder] they go up in gauge 0.11's or 0.12's.

You can certainly work at keeping your callusses in shape, but yeah, it seems that they shrink easily too.

it means you have weak and sensitive skin. the pain won't go away.

Playing the guitar is like sex. It's supposed to hurt a little.

Also, in addition to what has already been said, maybe you push down too hard or slide around your fingertips a little. If you can keep your left hand relaxed that may help.

I had the same problem. My skin might be dry or something. I started being careful about what did & the condition of my fingers before I played...

don't play right after you washed dishes (with your hands in soapy water) or shampooed your hair or otherwise dried the natural oils out of your fingertips. If your fingertips are too dried out, put some lotion on them...just not right before you play.

Since I've starting being conscious of stuff like that, I haven't had much of a problem...Plus it makes me feel better about not doing dishes!
