So.. Finally got some paying bands comming in to record(just locals making first demo)

Heres my setup..

Drums:
~Beta 52, SM57, MXL 603
Bass:
~DI, BEta 52
Guitar:
~SM57
Vocals:
~AT2020 or SP B1 (Which one do you suggest?)
Trombone:
~SM57 Any other mics suggested?(out of what I have)
Tenor Sax:
~SM57 Any other mics suggested?(out of what I have)
Bari. Sax
~SM57 Any other mics suggested?(out of what I have)

I have a Boss BR-864

Going to record all first to get a base track first..

Then:

Drums, Bass, Guitar, (Guitar), Keys, Trombone, Saxaphone, Vocals
(run base track through headphones, and let them play...)

Then Bounce them all to one track..

Any sugestions?

should I get a cheap Pre-amp or anything like that?

I'm 15 so id say my setup is ok for now...

Thanks,
Ethan

Hey, congrats on getting some work! Enjoy!

Try the 603's everywhere you might put a 57- espcially the horns. Try the 2020 and B1, too. Now way to get to know what works for what except to try 'em out.

As for vocals- try BOTH of the mics you have listed as you never know which one will sound better with any given voice. Have them trying getting right up close to it (up to 1-2" away, even) as well as backing off to 1-2 feet.

You would probably benefit from a better preamp (or a small mixer with a few better preamps) but that can be serious money. I'd wait until you know what you have and what it can do- you'll probably know more about what you need next by then. The hard part (and the *fun* part) is learning to do the BEST with what you have BEFORE running out and buying something else.

Take care,
Chris

Sounds good.

I like to record bass and Drums together (Senn e602 kick, SM57 Snare, SM54 highhat, SM 57 or AT drdrum for tom, MXL2001 overhead), I use a DI on the bass. I never mic the bass.

I will sometimes use the direct out of the bass amp, but only for live recording. A bass amp anywhere near the kick in the studio is picked up like crazy - I cannot isolate.

I give each a headphone to stay on track, sometimes give them a click track - I found I get no bleed this way, and it makes it really easy to mixdown later - and serves as a base for everything else.

I add guitar next (usually 2 tracks per - 1 mic'd and 1 direct), and then Vocals

I usually try 3 or 4 different mics on the vocals - every voice is really different.

You sound like you are on the right track - good luck
