Ok so im at home right now trying to get everythign setup...I now have ProTools and Digi Rack 002......On my PC I used Adobe Audition

#1 - In ProTools is their anyway to view in DB how loud the recordings are.....because i can see the meter but it dont show in DB where its hitting at...I liked on Audition how it showed the meter on the bottom in DB so when you listen through headphones you can look at the DB also

#2 - Without being able to see the DB level its hard to record with protools becuase when i record a voice WAV I cant tell if its too loud....right now the waves look kinda small but heres the thing....If I turn the gain up more on teh Digi......for some reason.....It sounds like some wind or sometin was passing through the microphone....yet the room im recording in is quiet and has nothing that would be making too much sound....so i guess im asking is their a way in prootools or on my mac to turn up in the input volume like u can on pc so that way the GAIN isnt up so much that you can hear every little sound and that.....

and last but not least....is their a way so when i record I cant hear whats being recorded throught the headphone....i like to be able to hear the beat and maybe what also has been recorded but i dont like to hear myself as im recording.....im guessing maybe i can press mute on the track and then press record while the track is muted

thank you,,

i really think protools can be a neat program but some of the minor things seem to be missing for some reason

how do you know what's being recorded if you can't hear what's being recorded?

im saying when u record then i go and hit play and listen to what I just recorded....but when i record in the headphones i can like hear my voice ya know like hear myself recording...im sure most ppl get what im saying....i think i just hit mute while i record the track...

so you are just listening to your voice, directly out of your mouth, with the previously recorded tracks playing back in the headphones?

i have'nt had the chance to play with pro tools but in sonar and cubase there is a "monitor" button for listening to the track being recorded. there is one on each track. maybe pro tools has something similar.

and now about the thing htat sounds like wind....I dont know why but how come with the digi like the gain is up almost 80 percent and from that it sounds like wind is blowing into the mic and still when recording only peaks at like -5 db....on my old behringer i was able to have it at +3 on the gain and record to peak at like -2....and that +3 wasnt even up on the gain thing like only 20 percent....sometin must be wrong because is houldnt have to have the gain u pthat far just to get a recording that still isnt loud enough...someone please help me....it aint my mic or the cables...sometin is wrong...im using the digi 002

what mic are you using? does the digi 002 have phantom power?

I am using

Marshall MXL 990
and yes Phantom Power button on the back is on

do you use a pop filter? i have heard of some people getting moisture in a condensor mic from not using a pop filter and the result being noise like you described.

I do use a pop filter...is their anyway to clean the mic if that is in their?

cause the sound its making is like when i turn the gain way up cause i have to because otherwise it wont record loud enough...its like a big wind storm going through the microphone...and the room im in is quiet....

like i said before, i have heard of people describe that windy sound from moisture being in a condensor mic. if that might be the case, you just have to let it dry out for maybe a week. i even saw someone mention placing the mic near an incadescent light bulb to provide a "little" heat to speed it along. you might wanna do a search for this in the mic thread.

do you have any other mics to try or can you borrow one? if you can get another mic, see if the windy sound is still there. did you try other channels on the digi?

alright, here we go-

first off the wind noise you are hearing....i'm having a hard time understanding the noise, is there a way you can post a sample of what it sounds like so we can hear it?

second...there really aren't any numerical numbers the PT mix window for you to compare levels. What people generally do is just watch the meters. get a nice, consistent level around the yellow line...and never peaking the top. If you're recording in 24 bit, you can even leave the levels down in the green and not be worried about if you're capturing your dynamic range or not...although it sounds like you're more concerned about loudness than resolution quality.

third, please don't compare the gain structure of one hardware device to another. Every hardware device is different and usually will have their preamp knobs in different positions in order to capture the same levels. That's just how hardware is made. Make sure that you also do not have a pad on you microphone and that the microphone button is pushed in on the front of the 002.....try another microphone too.

as far as headphones...if you don't want to hear yourself then just mute the track. it's suggested that you do listen to yourself as you can tell what is being recorded....but i can understand if you don't want to. Not all musicians are used to having headphones on and hearing themselves.

i know the 990 does'nt have a pad but do check that a pad is'nt engaged on the digi, if it has pads. to me, it does sound like the gain is just too high and bringing up of the noise level of the pre.

yea i was told by someone that i called that is as just the noise of the preamp hissing.....He said taht in protools somewhere i need to check to see if their is a PAD checked or sometin....i just dotn know hwere

Well I went and tested my marshall out on my Behringer mixer and even on that I had to turn the GAIN up more on it then before....and before when id id it didnt make that wind noise.....now it is....im wondering maybe if it is my microphone....but ive alway skept good care of it

it definately sounds like a problem with the mic. try drying it out and if that does'nt help, call mxl.
