When Japan entered the American market in the 50's, they made a number of RCA 77 look-alikes under several different brand names (Fentone, Cal-Rad, Aiwa, etc.). A few of them were actually ribbon mics and fairly decent, but most used a cheap crystal element as the mic. You wound up with a nice looking shell, but that was about it. They sold for around 5 or $10 new. Today, they're worth around $100 or so.
I don't remember whether the Fenton used a crystal or ribbon. How heavy is it? If it's very heavy, it's a ribbon. If it's lightweight, it's a crystal.
