My dad has some vintage gear from the 60's and 70's, and now I'm looking to set up my own home studio. He's got this Fender Bassman Ten. Is this a good amp? I'm new to this stuff. I mean I know it's old but is it useable for recording? Also I guess it's supposed to be a bass amp but can I use it for guitar also???

Old Fender Bassman tube amps with the 4 tens are great old amps.In the pre-Marshall days, the 59 Bassman was prized by guitarists for tone.Sounds like he's got you off to a great start.

That could be a very nice find. The original Bassman amps were desiagned for bass but a lot of people used them for guitars. Buddy Guy swears by them. Just plug in and start turning the knobs to see if you can find a sound you like. If the amp needs any work check out this web site http://www.ampwares.com/ffg/ I found your amp there and they have a schematic available for that one. Have fun.

Peace <><

thanks

thanks for helping me out, i can't wait to start recording some stuff. do you think a sm-57 would do this amp justice? like i said im just starting out so i'm looking into mics also.

More guitars have been tracked with an SM57 than any other mike. You will be amazed how much difference in the recorded sound it will make to change mic position by even a few inches.
Try having a buddy play as you wear headphones and make slight adjustments to the mic position.Trust your ears rather than some rule.Learn to listen very carefully to slight differences in the sound.Good Luck!

Back then, I _never_ knew a bassist who used one, but guitarists loved them.

I own one of those monsters... it really gave me the sound I was after. Having tried lots of different amps, this Bassman is a guitar hero-amp.

Enjoy, make sure he tubes are OK.

The Bassman 10 is NOT the amp which guitar players love. It is a bass amp, with a closed back, made in the 1970s.

For some reason, the quality of these amps varied widely. If you have a good one, it's a very nice SMALL BASS AMP. (I can hear you say, "SMALL?", but it's a 50-watt amp despite its weight).

Yeah, that amp sucks. You should send it to me, so I can rid you of unneccesary trouble and mental anguish. You pay for shipping.

My guitar playing buddy loves it. And it sounds pretty freaking great.

I'm a big fan. I regret passing up on two of these in a music store in Silver Spring, MD 6 months ago. Found them for a great deal too - only $300 each - when I went back, they were gone.

Good. What I'm trying to say is that if you're looking for a variant of the '59 Bassman, this ain't it.

What! you passed up, you could have traded your soul, your best friends' wife or what ever, but you should have got them both, hell I would.

I unfortunately didn't have the money to buy them (or one of them for that matter) at the time. When I went back the following weekend, they were gone.

By the way, my soul was traded back in '99 for a bottle of captain & a pack of cigs.
