i have a group that i will be recording in their living room (great sounding room) two girls singing two part harmony sometimes (really rare) i might be singing with them. the thing is these girls have sung together all their lives so they really do not know how to sing a harmony without singing with some form of eye contact. we are really going for a live tracked sound (folk music) so i am wondering what the best way to line things up are for our first demo...
my mics are as follows.
1 AT 4040
1 Shure SM55 (the elvis mic)
1 AKG D770
a really cheap Shure AR101 (dynamic vocal crap)
and my Boss loaned me an SM63 from Shure also.
the girls have an EV vocal mic... (not sure what the model is but i think its just a basic 58 knock off)
now i guess i have to find a decent way to record the girls with what i have...
i will be playing guitar so will one of the girls and the other one will sometimes jump in on fiddle so i am wondering about maybe vocals through AT4040 the AT4040 and then the SM63 as a room mic?
then close mic the guitars and let the room mic and AT4040 work the fiddle.
they have voices that blend really well so i am not really thinking i need to make 2 tracks for their vocals. but the guitar playing will need its own mic to bring it up in the mix on the one girl. and then myself off away from the rest of them maybe... but still with eye contact... is this going to be a really bad idea? the room sounds great and it would seem that we know enough of what we are doing that we will not need a huge amount of editing on the tracks when all is run. as soon as we can i want to put up the money for a couple better mics like a pair MXL 603 mics and maybe another LD mic but this is all i have for now... again this is not pop music or rock and roll so its not like i am going to use a huge amount of effects on the vocals maybe a little verb but that should be taken care of in the room i think... HELP!
