Its time to buy another mic for my female vocals country western swing, Crystal Gayle. I've done a few recordings as a trial using AKG C451b that weren't too bad but i think i need a LDC. Any ideas, do i need to spend big bucks to get something ok?
Thanks Again

Try out a bunch of 'em, and use the one that sounds the best on your voice.

There's no other way to do it. And unfortunately, there really isn't any way you can break them in to categories based on music genre either (i.e. this mic works for polka, and this mic works for folk). It just doesn't work that way.

Thanks Cheesrock, i think i was trying to say something like the more softer not shouty type of vocals. Difficult to try mics in the uk, its pay your money and take your chance.
Thanks

Well, why not use the mic that recorded Patsy Montana, Laura Lee, Rose Maddox, early Patsy Cline, and most other vocalists of the golden age of western swing (and country)? The RCA 77.

Oh, that's right - it's not made any more! Modern alternatives would be AEA R84, and for you UK folks, the Coles 4038.

"cheesrock" - I like that.

Interesting. Are you familiar at all with the Blue Dragonfly? I really like that one for soft, breathy type vocals. It has sort of a midrange scoop to it, and might be considered a poor man's C-12. AG's ribbon suggestion isn't a bad idea, either.

Best of luck,
