As the above lyric suggests, even though i've been doing bits of recording for a good few years, i've started to take it a bit more seriously, and in so doing i've stumbled on this site which is fantastic for its wealth of information - a real find. I'm hoping a few of you can help out, i've read a lot on here and a lot of you seem clued up

Could anyone please tell me what would be the most economical kind of mics and audio interface to buy for all round home recording, that will do a better than average job? i realise there are hundreds of techniques, and i'm sure i'll try many, but i want some solid, reliable hardware as a starting point. I'd say my budget is between £300 - £500

I've got two trustworthy sm58's already, and am assuming that for all round recording (guitars, bass, vox) i'll be needing some sm57's too, a s a friend suggests, however if anyone can recommend a different approach i'm absolutely open to ideas, i'm new to the site and would appreciate it.
Also, mic leads too - i realise these are important - which are best?

Thanks

I don't know how many channels you need, but for a very high sound-quality audio interface I really like the Emu 0404 USB (2 ch). It has superb converters (best in this price range) and great low noise preamps. Stick with the sm58s until you know what you need to change.

Hey man do you know if it works ok with windows Vista? And all this chat of downloading drivers (which i've read on a few reviews of different interfaces) is that the norm, or just to get round problems with getting them to run?

Thanks!

I use it with XP so I can't be much help there. I know the Emu 0404 USB has Vista drivers. It has no Win7 drivers yet per the Emu site, but I have read other users saying the Vista drivers work on Win7.

I had problems with Vista and had to switch back to XP

Looks like they posted new drivers for it on October 11th, 2010.

I only saw that because I'm also looking at that card! :-) Seems like they are into updating the drivers now, and yes, Vista and Win 7 use similar drivers.

I swithced from XP to Win7 this week and the new drivers (beta?) are working fine. I ahve the 0404 PCI version, not sure how much different the drivers are from the USB version.
