I am not sure if this is the correct place for this question but here goes ... Can I get some evaluations of the Yamaha QY700 Sequencer? I am in the "checking out" stage prior to purchasing a sequencer. My main instrument is guitar so eventually I would like to get a midi pickup, etc. for my guitar and enter data that way. For the time being, I will attempt to step write.

Currently, I have a Mac computer as well although it is an older G-3. I was surprised to discover that the QY700 saves to floppy disks. Aren't these on the way out?

Any discussion regarding this is welcome.

Hi,

I have this particular sequencer, and have to say that it is one of the best purchases I have ever made (my "G" holding top honor).
I can't speak as to how it would fare for your desired MIDI application, because I do not understand MIDI very well. In fact, I am facing a tough issue right now, due to not knowing how to go about using my QY700 as a sequencer for the internal sounds of an external keyboard. But I'm told that it can be done, so it is just a matter of my learning how .

I have done many, many things with this great sequencer - using its internal sounds - and have highly impressed others with the resulting products. Someone else may jump in (hopefully), and offer you more on the technical side of the unit. But I can include, here, that I have found the QY700 to be very easy to use - within the capacity of how I have used it - and I honestly think that you would find immense pleasure in this super sequencer also. My one and only concern, over this unit, is the very same that you voiced in your post: the floppy disk drive. But, with external gear, there will always be a 'work-around' to this, so I - personally - don't see it as a very huge negative thing.

All in all - a truly fantastic machine.

Nathan,

Thanks for your reply. It sounds like the QY700 is great as a take anywhere sequencer and songwriting tool. May I ask where you purchased the unit? Musician's Friend says they will not have them until the end of this month.

Hey Greg ~

I bought my QY700 from a place called Jackson Music, in Grand Island, NY - but that was nearly five years ago. I don't know what they are selling for, now, but I paid somewhere in the vicinity of $1400 for mine.

I don't know if you are aware of this, but there is a QY700 group at Yahoo. You have to join in order to participate, but registration is free. There is a SynthZone forum (www.synthzone.com) which may be of interest to you also. Check them out, for there you will be able to get a good picture as to how other owners are using this fine sequencer.

Let me know how you make out.

Blessings,

Nathan
