I'm interested in hearing what anybody thinks of a couple tunes I just put up. So give them a listen... or not. (Download them instead of streaming for better quality)
The Ashbury Quartet
thank you :)

i only managed to download "alright", the recording is a little harsh on the ears - very trebly - but the style is more on my side of the tracks, so i liked the song for that. With a proper recording it would be really enjoyable, keep it up kids :)

"alright" has a pretty believable retro vibe to it. the other 3 don't. good job though, on all the tunes.

Thanks, for the feedback. Yeah "Alright" is a bit harsh, but it's really hard to get a pleasantly "dirty" sound without it sounding ugly(especially with digital recordings). As for not being able to download the other ones, "myspace" seems to have a lot of technical problems, try checking back later.

I think the musical ideas are fantastic. I think the delivery needs some work, especially the drums. You have got to have somebody keeping better time.

You are on to something really cool..... I like your sound.

All I can say is that if you guys can explore melody a little more and start nailing those beats down you're on the right track. Just start being a lot more picky about the tracks you declare keepers. The vocals are a bit pitchy here and there... work at it until you nail it. With vocals like that, practice the way you spread syllables out across musical phrases and try to deliver them in musically interesting ways. Listen to a drummer whose fills make the most sense to you and learn how to apply creative rythmic figures to your vocal delivery... it makes a lot of difference.

I don't think the vocals are working for me on Maybe Stupid.

Anyway, don't get me wrong, I'm not slagging on you guys. I just think with some work you can capture the performances you hear in your head.

Please please post more stuff as you all progress - I think you have a cool sound.

I know where you're going with this, and it's pretty cool for sure. Digital isn't the problem here. It's not too hard to get a mor eretro sound out of digital, you just have to get sounding the way you need it at the source, you can't rely on tape to "dumb it down " for you.
