Feedback for a soundtrack/alternative metal mix

Hey!

This is my first time posting not only on home recording but in basically any forum so if anything is out of place, let me know :)

I would love some feedback on this track, if anything sounds unprofessional. I feel I am quite close to professional level in recording, mixing
and mastering but not quite there yet, would love the help to push me over that boundary.

This track is quite versatile and goes from ambient and moody to intense, so be sure to check out the end of the track too.

I am extremely grateful for anyone who takes the time to help me, I am also keen to return the favor :)

I don't really know how professional soundtrack music is supposed to sound.

I feel like I was hearing a fair amount of crackling on the loud parts. That could be my cheap headphones and on-board AD/DA converters, but it might be a good idea to double-check that.

"Dark City"? Any relation to the film? :D
 
I heard the same thing as VHS - I think it's clipping. Definitely cracking. It's really loud in spots.

I thought the tonal balance from low-to-high sounded pretty good.

The guitars in the last section sound pretty good. A bit on the amp-sim/digital tone. And again, everything is really loud and over-limited - especially during that section.

Level-wise, the drums are really taking a back seat to everything else. To me, it would be a much more dramatic mix if the drums were very upfront.
 
The end was the best..guitars sounded pretty good. I heard the cracklin' too...maybe you overloaded your main bus a touch?

It's quite possible something is clipping, I squashed it pretty hard to keep up with modern metal mixes,
another possibility is I was using too many resources when I was exporting the track from my DAW where it sounds like it bitcrushes certain tracks.

Yeah can't argue with that, I love loud drums, I suppose when limiting it to hell it may have have a negative effect on the drum loudness because the guitars for
me seemed to come out more when I was mastering, I mustn't have noticed the drums fading back. Thanks!

Unfortunately no, but it probably fits the vibe. I've yet to watch it! There's actually a patch for orchestral drums I used called "Dark City" and used it as the demo name, which stuck.
