FD 8 Help

What type of IDE Internal Hard drives can I put in this unit and how many gig can I get.

Alternatively Can I use a stand alone IDE external Hard drive and what ones.

I rang fostex but they where useless.

According to the FD8 Supplement fact sheet I read,...

the newest version of firmware will enable the FD8 to recognize up to ~30 Gig internal hard drive. (Find this & other info on the Fostex website:
http://www.fostex.com Look under "Support" and "Product Documentation".

Any external HD must be of SCSI type. ;)

I looked up Fostex but did not find the info you provided but where do I get the firmware and what drives can I use.

Sorry but I am a bit of a dud with this stuff.

Its all good but my basic question is where do I get the firmware and what drives are compatible with the new update.

I love the idea of a 30 gig hard drive that is internal but until I know which ones I can use this is all fruitless.

Fostex has no idea so I suppose I am looking for someone who can answer my questions with names of compatipal devices and places where I can get hold of the updated firmware allowing the Fd 8 to work with the devises, as I am drooling at the thought of putting in a 30 gig hard drive into my Fd 8.

Uhuh, uhuh.

Well, Fostex was supposed to supply the firmware, usually by Email or so I've heard, but if they don't do that any more, then I guess you're SOL. You can read the FW update procedure, but as I recall, it involved putting the FW on a compatible cartridge drive on your puter, such as a ZIP or SYQUEST, and then using the compatible SCSI-external cartridge drive as a source drive, to pull the firmware from. It's a bit complicated, as I remember, but nothing approaching rocket science.

The FD8 Service Manual has a section where it describes how to go into Service Mode, which is where you check your current version of firmware. It may be that you already have the latest version, but unless you read the manual and check yourself, you won't know how to proceed.

I believe there's a list of compatible HD's for the FD8 in the Service Manual, but it's been a while, so don't crucify me if I'm wrong. I know I've seen HD info somewhere, and I believe it was the Service Manual appendix info, to the best of my recollection. Even so, any list would likely be outdated, so again, you're on your own.

I opened up my FD8 a while back, and to the best of my recollection, it was a Toshiba 4.3Gb drive. I just searched Toshiba 2.5" drives, up to 30 gig, but I never sourced one,... for other than technical reasons.

It basically boils down to, you gotta read the manual before proceeding.

I managed to get 1.12.

The supplement says something to the effect of,...

"added functionality subsquent to version 1.10",... so with 1.12 you're probably okay, by my reading of that line.

I don't know what the exact latest version is, but when I get a chance, I'll verify that on my own FD8. As I said above, I have a 4.3Gb drive.

V. 1.12 sounds good, so far! I'll get back to'ya later. ;)

PS: You probably read the "HD Upgrade Procedure" in the Service Manual, but it's fairly straight forward. There's plugging in the drive, and one jumper wire that must be soldered onto the board.

Looks like I am finally getting somewhere.

Also I have Audigy 2 with breakout box and it has spdif I think thats what its called and also digital in and out optical.

Is this usefull for the fd8 as far as transferring tracks to pc and visa versa so I can edit them and save them.

Yeah, I think so. The optical output will output 8 discrete tracks to your software. Eh, I've never done it, but I understand it's supposed to work that way. ;)
